I use charcoal briquittes.

Thought I'd fess up before someone finds out.
I use briquittes, yes even Kingsford with all the additives!
In some forums , the use of charcoal that's not environmentally green lump is a NO! NO!, and the use of kingsford is a crime against humanity!
For years when smoking, I used a small amount of lump to start the fire & used mini logs on my backyard offset.
My downfall, was buying a WSM knockoff that used charcoal ???
For my first cook I followed directions & loaded with briquittes & a few wood chunks.
10 hours later pulled off the best butt I'd ever cooked!
Well for the last 3 years when charcoal is on sale ( $0.30/lb or less is when I buy) I stock up buying several hundred lbs a year.
I've also quit using my offset's firebox except for once or twice a year for old times sake.
I now have three vertical smokers & use them for long cooks.

As the old saying goes, "Dance with the one who brung ya'"  -- meaning go with what maximizes your benefit.

I cook about 95% on pellets, and I have my favorites there, too.  But when I fire up my Weber Performer I always use Kingsford briquettes.  They are reliable, produce uniform results, and readily available.  Years ago I tried some "lump".  It was expensive and unpredictable.

As Kingsfords un-honorary spokesman..you have nothing to be ashamed of LA!! I buy Kingsford -3- times a year at Home Depot when the double bags are 7.97 ea. I use around a 1000 lbs a year and its all good!! I even use KIngsford lighter fluid...yeah I said it....heck if it's good enough for Myron Mixon it is darn well good enough for me!!

Here...feel proud LA........nothing wrong with being a Kingsfordholic!!

    Our Heritage
Simply a Matter of Taste

And has been since the 1920s, when Henry Ford learned of a process for turning wood scraps from the production of Model T's into charcoal briquets. He built a charcoal plant, and the rest is history.

The Kingsford Company was formed when E.G. Kingsford, a relative of Ford's, brokered the site selection for Ford's new charcoal manufacturing plant. The company, originally called Ford Charcoal, was renamed Kingsford® Charcoal in his honor.

Today, the Kingsford Products Company remains the leading manufacturer of charcoal in the U.S. More than 1 million tons of wood scraps are converted into quality charcoal briquets every year.

Barbequing with charcoal has become immensely popular since Ford's time.

Bring some of that deliciously smoky flavor home today and taste for yourself how superior charcoal-grilled foods can be. Kingsford products are available nationwide at grocery stores, mass retailers, drugstores, warehouse clubs and home centers.

While I am all fired up..........I run Kingsford in my off-set and it runs all day between 225-230 without hardly any vent adjustments...just a handful tossed in every couple of hours and it is smooth sailing.... Kingsford is steady dependable heat and it doesn't hot enough to have high heat spikes in a off-set....I haven't been able to get that with lump!!

I think cookin' on charcoal should be a part of every outdoor cook's repertoire. And - who hasn't used Kingsford? If it works, and you like the results - that is what counts the most!

Doesn't it mean the exact opposite?  That you should  be loyal to what you started with even if something better/more beneficial comes along?
