I Need Your Help! Put Your Thinking Caps On!!
« Reply #-1 on: June 12, 2014, 10:26:42 PM »
Tonight at my gun club meeting I cooked hot dogs for 30 people on an old, falling apart Charbroil gas grill.  Someone had "appropriated" the propane tank, a long time ago.  The grill was usable only to hold two disposable charcoal grills that cost $2.98 each.  I proposed that the club should consider replacing the grill with something that would allow me (the chief-cook and part-time bottle-washer) to do burgers and dogs, at a minimum.  I was tasked with finding a replacement for under $500.

My role has turned out to be pretty important.  Without the food incentive, we might get 20 to 25 members to show up.  Apparently if you provide food, they will come in greater numbers.  A big meal in April brought 40 members to the meeting.  We only have 100 members, total.  Over the summer I plan to cook burgers or dogs monthly.

I am looking for a grill with sufficient capacity to cook more than burgers and dogs.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to which grills I might choose from?  I am thinking that the primary fuel should be charcoal.  Other people will be using the grill when we have monthly major matches where they sell food.  So, I want something that is well-built and can withstand a certain amount of "abuse" by others.

I know that there are a lot of sales going on now for Father's Day.  I also know that it won't be long before the big stores will start having "seasonal closeouts and sales".  I am open to any and all ideas.

I agree with the Weber, it is great and will last forever if you take care of it and it is not the type of camp where it won't be stolen. I cooked at a wedding at the beach in FL for 100 people on one of these folding grills that I thought would be a throw away but my stepson is still cooking on it. Minimal care will get you at least a couple of years on it and it has the cooking area of a Weber kettle or a little more.

I'm seeing a trend here.  Sounds like WEBER!!  Makes a lot of sense, too.  They are certainly rugged.  I have owned and cooked on them for many, many years.  A couple of 22" would create a bit of a storage problem in the club house.  The 26" would be easier to store since it is one grill.  At $300, or so, I could still get a few accessories for it, and be under budget.  Might even have enough left over for some charcoal.

I will sleep on this and see what other comments show up by morning.  Thanks for everything so far.

Tee,
Not sure I have the time for a road trip to SC right now.  You KNOW I hate to turn down a road trip.

make sure it is a 2014 model 26" kettle.  the front grey handle should have 2 two tool hooks on it.  the 2013 ones didn't have that.  the grate is made out of 304 stainless.  i would get a cover $30, good weber tool set (tongs & spatula) $36 & cooler w/ FT & ice $30.  26" weber kettle $300.  still under $500 buddy.  always there for ya art.   8)

Hard to argue with that recommendation. Maybe consider adding a rotisserie.

Art, sounds as if you belong to a great gun club. I would love to be a member there if you do the cooking.
