Springtime weather in the winter
« Reply #-1 on: February 19, 2017, 04:55:22 PM »
Decided to take advantage of the ridiculously warm, record setting winter weather in northern Illinois (65 degrees) to clean my MAK 2 Star.  With the exception of taking off the lid, I dismantled the grill, soaked the icky parts in a degreaser, degreased the outside, and emptied out the ash.  Took about an hour and a half.  Can't wait to get it dirty next weekend.

Curious about how you did the degreaser soak....
My wife had this large, flat tub that she used for dragging stuff around the yard.  I hijacked that from her and it's now become my MAK soaking tub (way easier than using the bathtub).  I bought some ZEP Heavy-Duty Citrus Degreaser from Menard's, poured about half the bottle in the tub, and filled the tub with warm water.  The grates, blank grease pan, etc. soaked while I used the Clean Strike (also purchased at Menard's) on the exterior of the MAK.  The Clean Strike works awesome on the smoke stains and grease.  I cleaned the grates, grease pan, etc. using steel wool.  Not everything came off, but it was way cleaner than when I started.

That reminds me, I need to clean my MAK soon!  I'll look for both products and a big tub.

Nice job on the grill.

I picked up some PENTRAX - Solvent Degreaser from work. Can't wait to try it in a month or so.

Oil eater is a great degreasing product.  HD has it on their website (maybe the store too), Costco used to carry it, and still does here and there but it's very hit or miss.  We use it at work (commercial bakery) and I think it is the best degreaser on the market.  It doesn't leave any white film as others tend to do.  Not sure if the ZEP degreaser does or not but wanted to offer up oil eater as an option.
