Home smokehouse plus pellets?
« Reply #-1 on: February 16, 2018, 04:30:29 PM »
There's a question somewhere in here....
So way back in the day when I was a wee lad my dad bought some cypress boards at a sawmill on the Tensaw River. They were neatly stacked on my grandmother's porch through my teen years and on. In my early 40's I had to tear down the old house and moved those boards to my present barn.
I have wanted to do something with them all these years but never decided what. My dad always had a smoker of sorts built out of blocks and he got a lot of enjoyment out of it. As did I...
Thinking about that block smoker gave me the idea  to build a smokehouse out of the boards this Spring.  I have done a little research and come up with several ideas about how to get fire and smoke to it. One is to mount a  Pellet Pro® Upgraded Pellet Hopper Assembly to it.
 What I'm wondering is.
Has anyone had any experience with these units?
They are almost $500 ... pricey in my opinion but if they are good quality I'd be OK with it.
 OR
Would one of those pellet pushers Tent had on his Kettle work?

Terry, I actually considered doing something similar a few years ago and looked at the pelletPro hopper assemblies.  That's the way I'd go if it were me.

As much as I like the Stoven unit, it's really built for a kettle, is nowhere near as automated as the PelletPro unit, and not much less in price.  Besides, the guy who owns the company had some health issues a few years ago and I'm not sure he's even doing anything with it currently.

Hope this helps!

Terry,

Don't think I could help you much with the pellet running gear for your smokehouse but I have a couple pictures of a nice little smokehouse that might give you some ideas.

Dave , That’s very close to what I’m hoping for...   Looks good. Are you just putting a few pieces of wood in a pan for smoke and heat?

Terry,
Check with Nepas.  He used to have a smoker similar to the one from Old Dave when he still lived in PA.

Terry, this fellow as best I can tell used a slide in metal firebox which would work with either lump, briquets, or burnt down wood coals form a barrel fire or something similar. If a fellow did use something like lump, he would also need some smoke wood as well for best results. As large as the cooker is and the amount of meat he has in there would have taken a fairly large fire to get all that mass done. I wish I had more information on this smokehouse but I couldn't get very much information on it at the time.

That is one sweet looking shack.  Don't they use these in Alaska as more of a way of preserving fish and jerky versus actual bbq? Wonder house long it would take a pellet unit to get up to temp with that volume. Just make sure those wood seams are air tight for efficiency. Maybe just nail in some strips of 1x1 over top of every plank seam.
