Title: New Rec Tec grill now on sale
Post by: TMB on November 15, 2017, 01:39:47 PM
May have to talk Kimmie into this one.   http://www.rectecgrills.com/rec-tec-grills-bullseye/

I don't need a smoker, my RT680 is good for that.  I don't need any more Big Easy's (according to Kimmie)  :D   But a 22in kettel pellet grill may just fit the bill!

I will get one as soon as I can figure out how Wendy will not see 399 bucks missing from our savings account...........

I mean this is probably the worlds first actual Pellet GRILL. All others need either expensive add-ons or grilling type grates. This bad boy looks like it does it right out of the box.

But what can it do that my RecTec 680 can't? I can grill on mine with the grill grates installed. I would get the same pellet flavor. So I guess I can pass on this ( even without the inevitable assistance from the wife when I would mention getting one).
I guess the only benefit I can see is that is is portable?

You make a good point. I have always grilled taking out the deflector and grease tray with just the cooking grates with grill grates on top and get a great sear.

This new offering is perfect for someone that would want a dedicated pellet grill instead of a charcoal or gas offering.

It sure is cool though.

Makes it easier to move for me.  I put my RT680 up in the cooking shed after cooking, this would be easier on my back and knees!

Well, that's what I'm gonna tell Kimmie  :D :D :D :D :D :D :D    I do see a few mods in it's future

Just got some info from RecTec.   I asked why no Bull horns and why black in color?

Bull horns were getting to HOT to handle, and RED didn't look good he said.    I hope to have one soon, but we'll just have to see

Looks nice, but I agree with Gus. My pellet grill will do the same thing. Mine isn't that portable though. I also don't care for the controller. Doesn't look like there is a way to dial in the temperatures you want. I will pass and wait for the MAK portable.

Actually...    the Stoven Pellet Grill was doing this same sort of thing out of the box years ago, on a 22" Weber.  The advantage with this new Bullseye is it's already built into porcelain enameled grill.

They list a Bullseye searing kit - which is $119.99 extra (whatever it is - I didn't see any specifics on it).

It looks like it's the same sort of controller as the Stoven.  There is no thermostat control; you set the pellet feed rate and adjust it manually for temperature (so it does require a little baby sitting - which in all honesty is fine).  At lower temps it could smother out and need to be re-lit, which could require cleaning out excess pellets from the fire pot (depending on how quickly you catch it).

They added an ignitor, which also looks to be controlled manually, but is a really nice feature!

I didn't see info on if it will run off of 12v DC which would be a nice feature for portability.

Overall, I like it.  I think the price point is right for the features it offers. It would make a good intro grill, or second grill to take camping, or to handle overflow cooking for large groups, which is exactly how we use the Stoven.

Not to ran on anyone's parade...but - I just don't see the point.  I think there are a number of choices in this price range that offer about the same mobility, and a larger - or more useable cooking area. I prefer a rectangle to a round shape - tho I love my old Weber Performer....I can't see the need. I predict this product will not do for Rec-Tec what the previous models have done, in terms of sales. Really crowded marketplace at this price point.....

Alright, I have looked and watched, it looks cheap in that I mean cheaply made, the assembly video shows that. It has a deflector and a drip tray but how did I miss where it goes, theirs no bucket. I think this is being marketed as a kettle that burns pellets. It looks familiar to most novice type Grillers which will get their attention and maybe some sales, maybe more than we think... Heard rumors that Rec Tec is discontinued the Mini and replaced it with this. I guess time will tell.

I got kinda excited when I saw this, but then I realized it is only 22 inch diameter.
I have 2 Weber kettles that I can run for 6 hours...
Now, with the amaz-n-smoker working in the Masterbuilt, I have my low and slow covered.
I don't think I'll want to use pellets for things 350* and hotter.
If I get a pelletizer, it will have to cook 4 - 6 racks at a time - baby backs or spares - minimum.  Will the Mini RecTec do that?

Jaxon the mini with the upper shelf can do 5 racks of ribs easily I have squeezed 6 on and it does work. They're probably is a video of it...

I see your point Tee, but I'm looking at this as a fuel I already have and it's easy to move around and with my knees and back that's a BIG plus!  I love my RT680 just hate to pull it out if doing a small cook.   This would let me do small cooks without the hassle of the RT680 or even moving my SRG's out of the cooking shed.  I see a mods for this unit (like that's a surprise)  ;) That if I buy one they will be done  ;)

Besides, it's close to my pellet SRG that I built and that thing can grill and smoke.   But the exception here is the mobility and that alone makes it worth the $$$  to me anyway.

Time will tell weather or not it's a good idea for them but for the $$$ if I bought a Weber and added a pellet burner like Clff's unit (which I like by the way)  the money would still be up there in that range.  The other reason I would get one, Kimmie could use it with out fear of BLOWING herself up like she tried to do with a gas grill  ??? :D

Just my 2 cents

Now I am wondering how this unit will work for lo and slo. I know it can cook at those temperatures but it seems more set up for grilling. I wonder how the grease management is for Butts and Briskets.

My first impression was that this was a Grill more than a smoker............

If it's anywhere close to my Stoven/Weber combo, it should handle Low & Slow just fine.  I actually use our Weber/Stoven more for Low & Slow than I do grilling. The heat is very even, BUT...  then again I'm talking about the Weber kettle design that's tried and true.   Will this kettle perform as well?  Time will tell.

Not knocking it Tommy...was just thinking out loud that it will not have as wide a market appeal as their prior products. We all have different needs tho....so I understand what you are saying about it for convenience.

Keep Kimmie away from the propane! :D
