Title: Outside the box? Me?
Post by: Jaxon on December 19, 2017, 09:14:29 PM
I've been thinking about this mod since I got the rotisserie ring for the kettle.  I find that when I bank the coals to one side, I lose almost half the space on my grate...even with a smokenator or "similar" device.  I can't cook ribs directly over the coals...gotta move 'em to the "cooler" side of the grill, limiting grill space and the amount of food I can cook thereon.
I drill holes in the ring and installed 4 bolts that support the grates at the top of the ring.
Then I placed the 18 inch heat deflector on the original grates at the lower level, using the snake method for the charcoal.
The heat was even throughout the cook and easy to maintain.
The ribs had a beautiful color from end to end.
The video is done backwards because I didn't decide to do it until the cook was set up.
I hope you can follow it.

Very impressive concept and mod (and almost easy enough that even I could do it).

Jaxon, I knew you were mad, but I didn't know that you were also a scientist. That is one cool mod. Better patent it before Weber sees this video. I like the backwards approach to telling your story. It was precise and concise. Good job. Now be sure to freeze a couple of those bones so you can reheat them on my next visit. They look delicious.

I'm still using the Fire Butler...I just "borrow" the heat deflector for this setup.

B T W, the foil actually helps to eliminate hot spots.

That's good to know.  It just seemed that it made such a big splash and then just disappeared, especially after the arrival of the Slow 'n Sear.

I believe I can modificate this setup a bit more by installing four more bolts in the middle of the ring so that I can us another grate there and doubling the capacity.

Does that sound practicle?

Jack - You're becoming the TMB of the Weber! Maybe you two should form a Modified Grill Consultants business. Then you could make some money and write off the cost of your toys tools and food.

I've seen several people add a third rack to their WSMs for basically the same reason.  I'm sure it would work in this case, too.
