Pellet Grills what do you do in the middle of a cook & the rains come
« Reply #-1 on: January 04, 2018, 02:26:35 PM »
When I came close on my pit boss It got me thinking about rain & wet snow & some of the long cooks you can do on Pellet Grills. I also read that these grill & water don't get along.

So

1) you are in the middle of a cook & the rains come??

2) no room left in the garage can these be left out all year including in the snow...yes with a good cover on?

3) How do they cook in cold weather

thanks Richard

My MAK 2 Star is on my grill uncovered.  I have used it in all types of weather (rain, snow, sleet) and have had no problems with it.

Keep cooking..... ;D

Seriously...I have a piece of Advantec sub floor material tha is a little bigger in width and length than the hopper on my MAK . This give me e to 4 inches of over hang on front...back and end. So no worries about the electronics.
I the case of wind....add to the above a prtial sheet of plywood so as to provide a wind break/windscreen.

I wonder if they are all that way as I have seen PG's & rain don't mix..........

I can't speak on other types of pellet grills, but my MAK performs outstanding in the elements.  There is probably an increase in pellet consumption in the colder weather, but that has got to be expected.

Jack and Tommy have the perfect solution for this.  A metal carport aka "cookport".   I hope to follow their lead soon.

My RecTec 680 has been used in all kinds of weather except snow since we haven't had any here in Alabama, close but not quite. But I have cooked in torrential winds and rain, and the only issue is keeping the water out of my adult beverages.

Just make sure to keep your pellets dry - they will turn into mud / "concrete like" if they get wet.

Keep you electronics as dry as you can - and (obviously) be careful with any electrical appliance in wet conditions - I dont think any pellet grill manufacturer recommend using the smoker in the rain as its a safety hazard. I know GMG does not recommend it:

I use my pellet grill under a deck in all types of weather (but it stays dry) _ I will be smoking deer jerkey tonight @ about 20F

The above described piece of wood ( you would use plywood...Advantec is VERY water resistant - long term...) is what I do if it is going to rain.

i agree for me it does not look like a good item. Even with a GFI It is not worth the risk in a long cook. I can't see building a shed for one of these grills.  Getting wet is not a problem but ruining a grill or worse is.  I may change my mind but for know Charcoal & gas.   Thanks Folks

Richard, I'm still with...no pelletizer here...yet.

I'm almost exclusively charcoal.  Now and  then I'll use the offset smoker.
