I am not a big "club" store guy but this is surprising. A little chink in the armor for the Walmart empire..................

We have a Sam's 15 minutes from the office....but last week I was in Greenville SC ( about 1 hour south down off the mountain ) and went into Costco.
I bought a membership because the variety of goods was better - and it felt like the merchandise in general was just a little nicer.

It is great to have choices.....

Even though my wife has worked for Walmart for almost 20 years (my daughter works for them too), I was never a Sam's Club fan. Their pricing really wasn't any better than local grocers, so I never really saw the appeal.

Somebody in PR needs to get fired. They have this huge announcement about raising the minimum wage for all employees and paying up to a 1,000 one-time bonus. Walmart is the largest private employer in the world. So it is a huge deal.
Then to have the Sam's club story on the same day.  Just stupid

Agreed about the poor PR. This is beyond stupid.  Wait until the politicians and the talking heads on radio/TV twist this around to fit a particular agenda.

The whole concept and business model of "big box retail" is changing.  Amazon and Whole Foods along with a very tight labor market are forcing the folks in Bentonville to maneuver to a different niche.  Interesting to watch.
