Made some pies yesterday
« Reply #-1 on: July 20, 2017, 10:41:28 AM »
I made 2 Buttermilk Pies, also known as Magnolia Pies so I'm told. I made one to keep and one to give away. I had never eaten them before, being born and raised in Georgia you'd think that I would've had one of these by now, lol. It is a good pie if you're into custard style pies. I ate more than my share, washed it down with some cold milk. Good stuff!

After I made those pies, I made up some dough and sauce to use for a Stuffed Pizza for dinner. I had some homemade sausage in the freezer and figured this would be a good way to use some of it. I let my wife do the honors of creating it while I made up a vegan pizza for my daughter using the same dough but rolled it thin and docked it and cooked it on a wire mesh screen. Instead of mozzarella, I use a vegan "mozz". She had 'shrooms as her topping. I didn't get pics of her thin crust one but I did get a pic of the Stuffed pie and the Buttermilk pies.

Stuffed Pizza constructed thusly : Bottom Crust, mozz, sausage and mushrooms, mozz, pepperoni and Canadian bacon, top crust, sauce, mozz.

Here it is while still hot and ooey gooey

Here it is after it cooled down, easier to see the layers

And here are the Buttermilk pies shortly after taking them out of the oven

All in all, I think everything turned out exceptional. My Wife wasn't a fan of the Buttermilk Pie but she's an oddball anyway :)

Those pies look exceptional RG.  Has your wife ever drank moonshine from a test tube?   ;)
Or ate rattlesnake, head cheese and limburger cheese?

Do you also use buttermilk in them? It's new to me but it's tasty! Custard with a twang!

Sugar Cream Pie - Hullingers
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
3 heaping tablespoons flour
2 1/2 pints of whipping heavy cream
pinch 'O salt
SIFT and mix dry ingredients, adding whipping cream gradually till mixed very well. Pour into 9" pie crust , store bought or home made, sprinkle with cinnamon and BAKE at 350º for almost an hour. Shake the pie on the rack to gently test for doneness, it shouldn't jiggle wildly. Bake pie on a sheet pan beneath for drips. Keep refrigerated.

Sounds good but I wouldn't say they're the same. This recipe is 1.5 cups sugar mixed with 1 stick of melted butter. Add 3 eggs beaten to sugar and butter mixture then add a pich of salt, 3 tablespoons flour, 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1 cup of buttermilk. Mix until smooth and pour into deep dish pie shell. Bake at 400 for 10 minutes then reduce temp to 350 and bake for 40 to 50 minutes until browned and toothpick slides in and out clean. I cook to about 190 internal.
