Title: My Favorite Booze
Post by: mrbbq on October 11, 2017, 07:53:33 PM
I'm not a big drinker. But if you looked inside my liquor cabinet, you'd think I was a booze hound. I'm more of a whiskey guy. Henry McKenna is mighty good either straight or on the rocks. Also like Knob Creek and Knob Creek Smoked Maple Bourbons. I won't turn down Jim Beam or Jack. Woodford Reserve is great, as is Jim Beam Stillhouse Bourbon (only available from their store in Louisville, KY).

I also like Absolut Pear Vodka. Add some tonic water and man, is it ever refreshing.  Not much for scotch or beer. Give me the brown stuff and I am fine.

Bourbon is the bomb (he says while looking at the bottle of Woodford Reserve on the counter).

Around the holidays try and find some Peppermint vodka.  It's hard to find, but it's good stuff for mixing.  Every time I find some one of my daughters seems to make it disappear to their houses.  That's the thing about grown kids, they still cost money  ;D

Fat tire or crown royal on the rocks for me.  Although a good dry martini ( I wave the vermouth in front of my shaker) with olive/onion is great just about any night.

And - I like Blanton's, Basil Hayden's Gentleman Jack.

Don't drink anything but a beer once in awhile, but use lots of Tenn whiskey and Kentucky bourbon for cooking

Will say Sparky got me hooked on Fat Tire  :D

As a young man I drank my share of whiskey, & I still keep a pretty good stock in my bar, but I seldom break it out anymore.
Usually just when I have guests who want something more than just a beer. ;) ;)

Also big into bourbon,  and kind of like to collect stuff,  typically have 10-15 different bottles at any given time.
My go to's for would probably be  Willet Pot Still and Blantons.

Also love to make/drink cocktails, used to be mainly whisky cocktails. Love a good Old Fashioned, Manhattan or Sazerac, but now  staring to branch to other spirits and pre-prohibition style cocktails with rum and gin .
Lots of fun to experiment with different recipes.

I wasn't a vodka drinker until I tried the Pear variety. It really is a very refreshing drink. If you like pears...even a little bit, I think you'd enjoy a pear vodka and tonic. Dont know where you live, but in Oregon, you can purchase small "sample" bottles and try a small version. You might want to do that.

Thanks for the tip!  Have seen the 15 yr from time to time  never tried it however.

For me it's almost always the same thing . . . a Bin Laden . . .

Yes, that's right, two shots (Famous Grouse) and a splash.  I prefer mine on the rocks.

I typically have 4 or 5 those a night.

For straight vodka, I like Tito's Handmade Vodka.   Smooth stuff.  I keep a glass bottle full in the freezer.  Alcohol content is high enough that it will not freeze in a residential freezer.  Makes a great mixer with no need for ice that way.   I've been a fan of the screwdriver since my college days (back when dinosaurs roamed the field still).  Simple, but oh so good.....

We used to keep a bottle of Herradura Anjeo in the freezer for sipping, as well as blue label Smirnoff's. Kinda got away from that after some years. Nowadays we don't drink a lot due to some medications we both take. But if I'm gonna drink a little it's gonna be a Bloody Bull, Macallan 12 yr or Havana Club Anjeo with coke. Occasionally we'll do some Nasty Martinis (like a dirty martini only dirtier)

Don't drink much whisky but when I do it's always bourbon that I can't afford.
Like Woodford Reserve, Rare Breed, and Jeffersons' Ocean.
Hot days by the grill or smoker, Pabst Blue Ribbon in a frosted glass is hard to turn down.
Don't believe it, ask the neighbors.

Bourbon is the only American spirit. Therefore, I have tried many and found my taste turns to Woodford Reserve, Noah's Mill, and Eagle Rare 10yr. When I am feeling Irish my go-to is Power's Gold or Dubliner (which is finished in bourbon casks).

Well, that's not really so. I don't drink bourbon but still occasionally dip into some "American spirits" (even if by "American" you mean US or North American varieties only). Although bourbon is prevalent in the US, many other different spirits are considered "American" (including rye whiskey, rye malt whiskey, malt whiskey, wheat whiskey, and corn whiskey), not to mention a number of "south of the border" spirits (tequila, rum, etc.).

Just sayin' (in a pedantic sort of way)...

I like the bourbon and usually go for the norms, jim, turkey, crown, jack. Once in awhile i will venture out and recently i tried a bourbon called Bulleit and it was real nice.

What about Tennessee Whiskey?... which is not labeled or sold as bourbon?  Rum - which came into existence in the Americas because of sugar cane....? And let us not forget moonshine/white liquor ( can't get more "American" than that)...which is not bourbon because it is never aged in a toasted Oak barrel.

Full disclosure...I am a Jack Daniels Squire. ;D So is ACW3. Even so - we try not to take "absolutist" positions.

Reading through this thread makes me thirsty!

Favor to ask:  I take some R.A. medicine that precludes all but the tiniest sip of great booze, so as you knock one back, have another one for me  8).  Fortunately, I can still consume GRAVY.

My wife also likes her Tequila, as long as she has lots of limes and "NO" salt at all.

I'm always willing to take one for the team - consider it done (several times over).

Before I had to quit drinking alcohol, I was a jack or crown and Coke guy. I preferred beer like Samuel Adams, Shock Top, Stella Artois and the ever popular Coors Light. I miss those days sometimes. Drink several for me everyone!

W.L. Weller Special Reserve is supposed to be the same recipe as Pappy Van Winkle; having had just a single glass of Pappy I can’t really vouch for that claim but the Weller bourbons are outstanding and very affordable.  Can’t go wrong with Maker’s Mark ... or even my guilty pleasure 100 Proof Southern Comfort.  :)

3 of us went Elk hunting this year. On the road we "re-discovered" Weller. We actually re-discovered a LOT of liquor stores along I-40 between North Carolina and Colorado... :D :D :D ( None of us drink much. Just have curious tastebuds - like all folks that love bbQ and cooking..) And - during the multiple hours of discussions...of of course tasting... ;D we also found an on-line recipe that is supposed to be the "Poor Man's Pappy":

http://bourbonr.com/blog/poor-mans-pappy/

The write up makes me want to try it. But, for now I have too little space to age another bottle or cask of anything for now.

It's usually red wine or beer for me, but when I do enjoy a little hard stuff, it's Knob Creek for me(or my buddies 'shine when available).

My wife loves her Tito's Handmade Vodka so I always have a bottle of that and I will have a sip or two. When I want booze besides my beer I like to sip on some good Jameson or Bushmills.
