Crazy meat prices
« Reply #-1 on: November 18, 2015, 10:26:58 AM »
I went shopping at a large grocer the other day for some ribs and a brisket flat for some pre-Thanksgiving meals... I discovered what sticker shock really is!

Baby Back ribs were not too bad... Average weight for a 13-bone slab was about 2 1/3 pounds at $6.99 per pound.

But the brisket flat was unbelievable! The 10-pound brisket was $8 per pound for a total cost of a little over $80!! After trimming to remove most of the fat cap (leaving about 1/8 - to 1/4-inch of fat), the brisket weighed 8.44 pounds making the actual cost about $9.50 per pound. Almost as expensive as tenderloin beef.

The butcher tried to console me: "It's Choice beef and a flat," he said. "Would you like me to trim that for you?" (I wish he had trimmed it and charged me the trim weight! $8 a pound for fat is a bit on the expensive side.)

I'm not sure I want to know the per pound price after cooking loss. (I usually figure 30 - 40 % loss from cooking so about five to six pounds of finished brisket.)

Barbecue it getting to be an expensive hobby/ sport/ obsession!

You are correct 150% ! ! !

In my case, I'm very fortunate.  I have access to a Sam's, US Foods (ChefStore), and Restaurant Depot.  If I was paying retail for everything, I wouldn't be able to have half the fun I'm having right now.  And I certainly couldn't afford to compete.

I couldn't agree more.  Lucky my butcher charges $3.99/lb for a whole packer brisket or $1.99/spare ribs, $1.49/lb butts.  Pork butt isn't too bad at Wegeman's $1.49/lb (unlike everything else there) but my local Giant (Ahold company) charging $2.99/lb for pork picnic/shoulder with the skin on.  Ribs are generally 2.99 for st louis and 3.99 for baby backs.  If I ever saw ribs for $6.99 I don't think I would ever go back to the store.

I did find mis weighed baby ribs, 3 racks all weighed in at 1 pound but were actually 3.25 lbs each.  Of course grabbed them and went to self check out where the UPC weight didn't match with the self checkout scale.  Nothing like 3 racks of ribs for under $10!

We have a Cash and Carry about 10 miles away a whole packer Angus choice brisket is 2.73/lb, pork loin is 2.04/lb, baby backs run 2.96/lb and pork butts are 1.37/lb
So guess just lucky where I live.

Local grocer has butts on sale for $.99 lb this week.
Wally World sells 12 to 15 lb briskets at $2.46 lb.  Problem is they don't have a lot of 'em  so you have to get kinda quick when they come in.

I'm mad and I'm not going to take it any more.  I'm not cooking any more stuff that requires me to advance my home equity credit line to buy and I'm not cooking any more stuff that shrinks down to one tenth the size after I trim it and cook it.  Man, I'm going to get tired of baked carrots  :'(
