Pam, you shouldn't just start cooking on it, even if it's pre-seasoned.  You should wash at least the cooking grate thoroughly FIRST, with soap and really hot water to get rid of the protective coating they put on it before shipping.

Even lodge says to wash it before the first use: Lodge - Seasoned Cast Iron - Use and care

Like Cliff said, plus the first time you fire it up throw a pound of bacon on it. I always use bacon for any first cook on cast iron. Bacon grease fixes everything.

Yes I agree too you should was any cooking utensils before using. If they come from China they get soap and water! By the end of the week I should get my Grill and think I will wash the grate off rub with lard and my first cook will be some pork burgers! Old Dave made me hungry for them! Don

I have never washed cast iron grates before seasoning.    just build a hot fire to burn off the manufacturing "grease/oils." then while they are still hot, like was just said, cook bacon on ALL of the grates, or melt some lard or shortening and wipe the grates with that.    After a few more cooks, especially with something that has a fair amount of fat, you'll never have to oil or grease them again.   Mine on my CB940X probably have enough grease in them to keep McD's happy for quite some time!  LOL
