Pellets in SRG
« Reply #-1 on: November 19, 2016, 09:27:24 AM »
I have never used pellets. Only wood chips or pucks for smoke.
I'm thinking about trying pellets in the smoke box of my SRG.
Has anyone used pellets with any success, (in the SRG smoke box) & if so anything in particular I should watch for?
I know a lot of people put them in the bottom, but I want to try them in the smoke box.

If I do try pellets, is there a particular brand/brands that are better, or are they pretty much the same?

Any advice form those who use pellets would be appreciated.

I only use pellets, and found a good deal on Amazon for clean-burning hickory. Very pleased and enjoy the higher smoke level and longer burn. The smoke is less subtle with chips, of course. I like the pellets for long cooks like butts.

Can't recall the brand, since I tossed the bag weeks ago.

Pellets are all I use in the SRG for smoke have used them in the box, on the bottom or if I'm cooking on the grate I'll put a handful on the grate. Currently using lumber jack competition blend. Learned all of this from the the Undisputed King of The Big Easy "Tommy"  :)

I have tried both pellets and chips in the BEESR's smoke box and prefer the pellets.   My SRG's don't have the smoker box.   Just keep an eye on them some boxes will stop smoking in 20 mins then have to pull the box and shake it to get air to the pellets.    You can drill extra holes in the box this helps

Thanks guys.
Do pellets burn slower, i.e. smoke longer, than chips?
I can't get more than about 15-20 minutes out of the chips.
Do they introduce as much smoke flavor into the meat as chips do?

I do get better burn times with pellets.  May just be me but pellets smoke/burn at a slower rate than chips.     Although as for better flavor I can't say other than if using chips with heavy bark I seem to have a soot type flavor not a clean flavor like pellets

I picked up a bag of Lumberjack competition blend today, 20 lb. bag was $9.95. Is that a good price?
I'll try it & let you know what I think.

ive used all of everything in there, pellets burn slower but gldont give as much smoke flavor, enough for chicken or ribs but not big meat imo.

i just used wood chuncks in my box with great results, slow burning and great flavor.

i also made a pellet  basket that goes in the bottome of my cooking chanber with five much more even smoke the box doesn't evenly fill the chamber its too high and the smoke just goes straight up and out the side vent imo
