Smoked Apples Ala MAK!
« Reply #-1 on: October 10, 2017, 04:42:54 PM »
Another Tuesday, another reason make it “Tasty”. October is National Apple Month and we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate it, than to share our Smoked Apple recipe. Today, there are at least 7,000 different varieties of apples grown around the world.
Apples are thought to have originated in Asia or Eastern Europe, and have been grown and eaten for thousands of years. Recent studies point out that the old adage of “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” may very well have some medical truth to it.
Whether you eat apples for health, or just because you love their flavor, we think you’ll enjoy this delicious recipe:
Ingredients—per person:
1 apple per person (Red or Golden Delicious, Gala or Honey Crisp are all good varieties to use)
2 Tbsp. brown sugar
1 Tbsp. raisins and/or dried cranberries
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. water or Spiced Rum
½ tsp. chopped almonds, hazelnuts or pecans
Preparation:
Wash and dry the apples. Cut off one to two inches off the top. Using a knife or spoon, create a bowl inside the apple by cleaning out the seeds and core. Leave at least a half inch of apple flesh around the inside and bottom of the apple.
In a bowl, mix the brown sugar, dried fruit, cinnamon and nuts. Combine all ingredients together. Spoon this mixture inside the apple and lightly tamp down. Add the teaspoon of water or spiced rum.
Place the prepared apples in a baking pan or wrap the apple half way up with aluminum foil.
Cooking:
Start your MAK and leave on SMOKE. Allow the grill to come to temperature. Place the apples inside the grill and smoke for (30) thirty minutes. Then, raise the temperature to (300) three hundred degrees and continue to cook for 30-45 minutes, until the apples become tender-but not mushy.
Once cooked, remove from the grill, remove from pan or foil and place inside a dish. For dessert, add a scoop of ice cream. For breakfast, quarter the apple and mix in with oatmeal or hot cereal.

Thanks gang for the compliments. The smoked apples (and/or pears) are delicious. Either as a dessert or chopped up and mixed in with hot cereal, they are wonderfully tasty. And...I've been reading alot about the health benefits of eating apples, how they contribute to heart health and help to lower blood sugars. So the ole addage, "An apple a day, keeps the doctor away." seems to be proven more and more via modern medical research.
