Martin's BBQ in Nashville
« Reply #-1 on: February 12, 2018, 04:00:36 PM »
So I step out of my Uber and the smell of fire and meat hit my nose. This legit looking place was right across the street.

This is my first time in Nashville, so wasn't sure what to expect. This place is a whole hog shop. The menu frustrated me as I like to sample several things, with a little of each. So I got brisket, which was awesome. And 5 bones of spares, which were average at best. They hit the spares with some serious amounts of rub before serving. Not sure how I feel about that.

Anyway it wasn't a cheap place for lunch.

One picture of the pits.

I've found that hitting the bbq joints can be hit or miss.
When I visited Big Bob Gibson's in Decatur Alabama the ribs were fantastic, the pulled pork and brisket tasted like, (and probably were), yesterdays reheated leftovers.

Visited "The Shed" in Ocean Springs, MS, had a pulled pork sandwich, nothing special.

I think the hype from awards and TV shows raises our expectations far above what we produce on our own smokers in our backyards.

I used to occasionally hit a Dickies while out on the road but I have absolutely no intentions on paying anyone for their "famous" BBQ. I would rather do my own.

However, those pits they have look like they have been there a spell.

Pappy, no food pics? I love the story but would love it more with a visual :P

Bob is right on the money, most celebrated places don't live up to the hype. There are exceptions though, for me Franklin BBQ met and surpassed my expectations! I agree about the Shed, it was okay. Nothing memorable.

Truer words were never spoken.....We have some advantages over "commercial BBQ".... TIME. And - no need for cost/portion control in order to be profitable. As well - we have more freedom to experiment with methods, flavors, etc. Our "customers" will come back even if they were not thrilled. ;) ;D

Pappy, there are some great BBQ joints in Nashville, but you will have to get a local that loves good BBQ to tell you where, there will be no advertising :(

You have to think, too, that when Guy visits a place, he isn't gonna say, "this is average bbq" or "I would never recommend this place". He's getting paid promote those places.

I'd like to visit the Shed just for the "experience" because it looks like a cool place - way outside the box.

I like going out to dinner, but I hardly ever order anything I can make out on my cook deck, because I always come away saying I could have made it  better at home.
That's not braggin' about my cooking. It is average, but still better than a lot of restaurants.
I haven't bought a pizza since I got my pizza oven. (& I love pizza).
V won't eat the ribs from the best BBQ joint in out town. She says our ribs are better. :) :) :)

Pappy,
The next time you are in Nashville, go eat at Loveless Cafe.  All their food is really good.  You won't be disappointed.

Tee and I stop there on our way west.  We have posted lots of pictures.

When we went there we found the same thing.  The pork butt from Wics (might not be spelling this right) was the best I've ever tasted.

I've gone to the shed in Destin FL and wasn't impressed. Been to a couple of local joints while out on the Harley and some of the best Q I've had. No name places that we're outstanding.
Love to cook and eat

I go to St Louis for work now and then. Everyone said to go to Pappy's for BBQ. So I went. Worst spareribs that I had in a long time.
