Stepping up to wood!
« Reply #-1 on: April 02, 2017, 10:03:04 AM »
So I came across an Oklahoma Joe Longhorn on Craigslist for $300.  He had already done some of the mods that I was looking at and it he had hardly used it.  He had already done the door gaskets ( need re-done ), the down pipe to grill level and added a propane option.  Future mods are to add latches, beef up the firebox door, and add a horizontal cabinet.  Looking at it last night, I may add reverse flow tuning plates. Doing some test cooks this weekend, and I will post them as well.

Good price. I like to keep the side door open all the way in the firebox during the cook. This way you have a smaller-hotter-cleaner burning fire.

Try getting your splits hot before adding them to the coal base. This way they will burst into flames faster and will not smolder initially............

Thanks guys, I'm pretty happy with it so far, although I need to make friends with someone that owns an orchard, this thing eats through the wood.

Smoke, I tried that at the end yesterday, made a big difference.   Am I better off using smaller splits or larger.

Depends on your fire-box size, I like em around 12 " long. Most outfits will have them 14-16. Check around for a good wood source locally that will work with you  :)
