Are Posted Photos Now Larger Than the Screen?
« Reply #-1 on: June 24, 2014, 03:50:19 PM »
All of my Windows computers have 16:9 aspect ratio screens.

It seems that lately, in almost every post that has photos, the photos exceed the screen size.  Of course there's a horizontal scroll bar but it's only available after the last photo.

I resize my photos so they fit and I'm assuming that most posters do too.  So I'm thinking that it's some setting on my screen or on LTBBQ.

What have I done wrong?

A lot of people are posting pics from their cell phone. If they're taking pics on fine settings the pics will be bigger than your screen.

Not a safe assumption to make,  but it doesn't hurt to be sure your zoom size for LTBBQ isn't locked in at higher than 100%.

You can try Holding [Ctrl] down while scrolling with the mouse wheel (like Spuds suggests), or...

an easy keyboard shortcut to reset your zoom back to 100% is: [Ctrl] + 0  (Control + Zero).

Ironically, Tim and I were just talking about this subject a few evenings ago.  As a general rule of thumb:

640 X 480 is a good average size for most pics.

740 X 555 good size for money shots;  easy to view without being in-your-face big.

800 X 600 should be considered a good size limit for forums running the SMF engine (like LTBBQ).

Anything bigger and pics start getting uncomfortable to view, or start requiring scrolling which actually detracts from your photo.

Thanks for the comments.  I knew about the Ctrl-+ and Ctrl-mouse wheel but on the posts that give me problems reducing the photos so they are not off of the screen makes the text microscopic.

So—it's nothing I'm causing, then?  Then the posters have some changes to make?

Cat, your photo just fills the allotted space.  No need to scroll.

This is a script a fellow made for proboards but its all Greek to me  ???.It resizes photos on the forum to 640x480 when they are posted.
If it makes sense to you then feel free to use it.I have this in my global footer.Its a proboards forum if that matters?

http://support.proboards.com/thread/474992/image-resizing

<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
/*
Modify image size to fit forum
By Todge
Please keep this header intact
*/

var picWidth = '640'; //Maximum image width..
var picHeight = '480'; //Maximum image height..

var pics = document.images;

window.onload = imageSize;
function imageSize()
{

var p=pics.length-1;
while(p>-1)
{
if(pics[p].alt=='[image] ')
{
if(pics[p].width>picWidth || pics[p].height>picHeight)
{
var thisPicWidth = picWidth;
if(pics[p].height/(pics[p].width/picWidth)>picHeight)
{
thisPicWidth = pics[p].width/(pics[p].height/picHeight)
}
var newWidth = 100-parseInt(thisPicWidth/pics[p].width*100);
var picLoaded = document.createElement('A');
picLoaded.setAttribute('href',pics[p].src);
picLoaded.setAttribute('target','_blank');
picLoaded.innerHTML = '<font size="0">This image is reduced by '+newWidth+'%, click it to view full size.</font><br><img src="'+pics[p].src+'" width="'+thisPicWidth+'" border="0">';
pics[p].parentNode.replaceChild(picLoaded,pics[p]);
}}
p--;
}}
// -->
</script>

This is a script a fellow made for proboards...

<script type="text/javascript">

Good info for ProBoards, but unfortunately embedded scripts of any kind do nothing in SMF forum posts.

This, however, will work for SMF forums: Resizing Preview Pics

This is what I normally do:
1.   Take picture with my Galaxy S3
2.   Load pictures to my computer
3.   Open them with Microsoft Office 2010
4.   Edit size to web large (640 x 480) - Save
5.   Upload to photo bucket
6.   Copy the IMG link and add to what I’m posting
7.   Select preview before posting
