Looking for good temp gauges?
« Reply #-1 on: March 24, 2016, 08:04:59 AM »
Just got my first stick burner, and I need to add temp gauges to the doors. I need two since it is a two door pit, and I want a gauge on both ends of the pit. What are some good gauges that won't cost you an arm and a leg like a pair of tel tru's do!
Thanks!

Thanks for the advice! I got a custom built pit that I found on Craigslist. Definitely was a deal I could not pass up. It's a 20x36 cook chamber in 3/8" steel and the firebox is 1/4" steel, pit is brand new!

Very nice. I like the double door system so you won't let too much heat out if spritzing or basting. I also like the square fire-box. I like to set a couple of splits on top so they warm up so they will burst into flame and burn clean when adding to the coal base. You will like these Old Smokey gauges. Easy to read and pretty darn accurate.

Just keep checking CL man, that's how I was every day a couple times a day I would check. It really paid off I practically stole this pit from the guy I got a great deal on it!

Nice looking rig. You should be cranking out some good food on there soon!
When you mount the gauges remember that the temp is lower at the grate than up top. I added a gauge between the doors on mine because of this.

Couple hints.
3 in gauges are a lot easier to read.
Check the size hole you have to drill, may vary from 1/2 in to 7/8 in.
A 7/8 in hole is a PITA to drill in 3/8 in steel!

Yeah I was thinking it's not going to be that easy to drill through that thick steel!
