Cleaning My Grill Grates...
« Reply #-1 on: December 31, 2011, 08:20:21 PM »
I found that my Grill Grates were looking like they needed a serious cleaning.  So I decided to do something different.  Not one of my finer moments, however.  I decided to not clean/burn-off the crud on my Grill Grates recently on the grill.  However, I did put them into the oven and turn it on to “clean”.  The first picture is the Grill Grates before they went into the oven.

The next picture involves a little “smoke” escaping from the locked oven door.  I am happy to report that my smoke detectors are working just fine.

If I do this again, I will remove more of the crud before firing up the oven.  I didn’t get an after photo, but trust me, the Grill Grates look better than when they started.

My neighbor told me once that her hubby would put their grates in a big trash bag and toss in some ammonia and he would seal the bag tight and the grates would come out clean...sounds old school to me.

I got me one of those torches.......great for the que and great for killing creepy critters around the property!!

I have cleaned a lot of really cruddy cast iron by spraying them liberally with oven cleaner and putting them in a black garbage bag in the hot sun. After a couple of days most gunkwill brush right off. Wear goggle and gloves and wash really well afterwards then immediately start the reasoning process.

Well, you kinda have to use a "reasoning process" to figure out what to do next.

Feel better?  ;)
