First time using PBC as a grill
« Reply #-1 on: August 02, 2015, 08:54:02 PM »
Hello all,
Apologize for the unicorn post but today I used my PBC as a grill for the first time.

Made a steak and some italian sausages and I have to say they came out great.

Problem was by the time I grabbed my iPad for some pics meat was half gone and there was no sign of the sausage.

Gauging by that, the cook was pretty successful.

Used the grate and did not put lid or rebars in.

Worked great -- will definitely continue to experiment.

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Thank you

Chris

There have been some successful cooks using the PBC as a grill. And maybe a bit of arm hair lost during this process.

Sounds like you have a winning cook this time :P

Hello,
Yes grate and basket in normal position.  I did not use cover or rebar.

As far as the grill marks -- on the steak not as pronounced as when done on my Weber Propane, but they were there and since it was a top-round or london broil I sliced it so no one noticed.  I did 8 minutes per side and the steak was juicy with some pink in the middle (the folks yesterday do not like rare meat-- as where I like mine still mooing )

It worked out very well, but I will still experiment.

Thank you

I cooked on my grill for the first time as well the other day and I've had my PBC for over a year.  I cooked Hamburgers and they turned out great.  I don't like mine red inside so I cooked them for 10 minutes each side.

Sounds good except I really like my burgers done. Did you raise your charcoal basket. I think you get more smoke flavor by cooking with basket in the bottom and bars in and lid on. Takes longer and no grill marks, but you get some  smokey juicy hamburgers.  :P

I did not raise the charcoal basket or put the rods and lid on.  The burgers were well done with the amount of time I cooked them.  I don't like the inside of my burgers to be red at all.

I filled a large weber chimney with charcoal and then lit it and let it sit until the top of the charcoal was starting to turn white.  I then dumped this into the charcoal basket inside the barrel and then put the burgers on.  The large weber chimney only filled the charcoal basket about 3/4 full so the basket was not totally full when I did this cook.

The reason I had never tried cooking burgers on the PBC before was because I was concerned that not enough heat would be at the grate level to cook them well but I guess the design of the barrel carries the heat to the grate because there was plenty of heat at the grate level.  Like I said before, I left the lid off and the rods out just like Noah says in his instructions for cooking burgers and it worked out good and the burgers had a good taste.  I used the beef and game rub on them.

I have thought about raising the basket and using like a grill. Don't know why it wouldn't work.

Should work great...just have a hot side and a cool side. Use it just like a Weber kettle, lid to.

If you are using it to cook hamburgers would it work it you put the rebar in and place the grate on the rebar?
Seems like it would make it easier to flip 'em and could save your arm hair.
