Title: What About Google Photos?
Post by: Dakota Don on July 06, 2017, 11:44:29 PM
Since Photo Bucket is broken (forever in my opinion) I've been reading about various photo sharing sites. While I like Teesquare's suggestion about SmugMug, I'm frowning at the $48 per year {I'm feeling pretty tight-ass today  :-\)    The totally FREE Google Photos sounds like the best of both worlds.   Here's a bit of copy & paste from one of the photo enthusiasts;
'While the free version does include slight compression, I don’t mind this since these aren’t the only copies of my images. Google’s iOS and web apps offer some fun extras like turning photos into GIFs and creating “stories” around specific events.
In short, Google Photos offers the best of both worlds: local organization plus a great cross-platform viewing experience.
My immediate plan is to create a specific Google account for my cooking & hobby photos that I want to share.  I will leave my large photo album with many years of family pictures & treasures in my private Dropbox account.   Just my thoughts, I'd love to hear (see) more posts on this subject, as I think we can safely say we are ALL DONE with PB and their BS. :'(   Don

Does google allow 3 rd party posting ?(Like where on photobucket you can used to be able to copy the img link into your post and see your picture)

The only input I can give you is this: It is frustrating when i allow myself to believe that "FREE"....really means free. It doesn't.

What it means is - there will be ads, or a charge to remove/retrieve my photos later if I choose. Or some other "hook".

It does pain me a little to pay for photo storage. But - with a company like Smugmug - photo storage is their priority - not a sideline. They do offer printing services of various kinds...but everything they do keys in on storing your photos.

It makes a BIG difference longterm.....

I still use DropShots. It's free and still works great. If you need smaller pictures I use a little program called Image Resizer for Windows. It's only 900kb in size and you just right click on any picture and tell it what size you want. It's free also.

I have started using DropShots since all of this started with PB.  If only the Android app (and I assume IOS) supported getting IMG links instead of having to use the mobile web version to do all work from the phone.

If you are Amazon prime you get unlimited photo storage as part of the annual fee. I pushed about 10,000 photos out to it. All accessible on a great app. I really like it.

I don't really understand what the issue is with Photobucket. I've been using it for years and still use it to post all my pictures for forums. Yes, they had big time issues for a while when they upgraded their site but since then I have not had any problems. I don't think I've ever had an issue with my Photobucket photos not showing up on a post. If you over on the Share of a photo you have an option to copy the link. Easy-Peasy.

Maybe I don't have any issues cause I always resize and tweak my photos (using Microsoft Office Picture Manager) from it's original size of say 4608 x 3456 pixels to a new size of 800 x 600 pixels. I only upload the 800 x 600 photos to Photobucket and keep the original photos on my PC and backup the photos regularly to external removable drives.

Are people uploading the original size photos?

Google Photos (formerly Google Picasa) is basic, but works absolutely fine.  It's what I use.

They have two storage options when you sign up: "Original Size" (limited storage - you can buy additional storage), which retains your photo's original resolution, and "High Quality" (unlimited free storage), which  automatically resizes your photos to a reasonable size (around 800 X 600) which works perfectly fine for most Internet usage, including forum posts.  Besides, the forum is set to limit photo size to 800 pixels wide anyway.

The only catch is they don't have a button/form that automatically gives you the IMG tags for posting in forums, but even that is not a big deal.  Instead of clicking a button that gives you the IMG link, you right click on  the photo and "Copy the Image Location."  Then in the forum post click the "Insert Image" button, and paste the URL it inside the IMG tags (in fact this method works for ANY photo hosting site).

I've been a Amazon Prime member for years and didn't know about this. LOL.
Just download the app and sent over 6,000 photos to storage.

I assume you have one of their paid accounts.  You will find out the problem when you go to renew.  To do anything other than post a photo on their site and require people to go to your page on their site to view it, you must now have a $400 annual fee account.  The IMG function is being blocked unless you have the $400 account. You also cannot direct link to the image within your album page, they have to visit your page and albums to see photos under their new terms of service.  And visitors will have to suffer through all the cookies, ads, and crapware they run in the background on their site (next time you go there, just watch all the page calls and you will see what I mean).  that is why their site seems so slow, too much junk they are loading. They have basically broken 99% of the forums and how to pages on the internet in the name of greed.

As I understand it, a currently paid account is still good until the next renewal, then you must upgrade to the $400 account.   It's basically extortion if you want to keep all your image postings in forums working.

I like the app as it has a "on this day" feature. Great way to see photos from the past years on this same day.
It has a family function too. So my wife's photos from her phone go into the same account

Ok, not sure if the images will disappear but I got them working for now.  One thing I didn't see mentioned previously was that each browser has it's own system.  Using Firefox on a Windows 10 PC, simply open the image in Google Photos.  Right click on the image and select "Copy Image Location".  Paste that link between the Insert Image tags and it seems to work.

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/TmcG7XMv8rxhErZBfUMt7crA6TMPzpXpFo5pHwcx0x9JaIlmEsAoGEMWvbX9Wbv5IBKXkt3uDwZ0OVQVW4Llb2KZiehKYTrc5hV62U0Yt-PsYeLTjc7UGggKu-XhQH28cq35x-TMdBD2UEwv8ba5SfDt_gjn0A_2WCSB3CVz6-Uxpxg1cqIhf3v1bhcYnmY7lsnwEvQmXtxHNitQB9pv0H7xV6PiMbal03UWxKHgTcgHQY6Cchwi9qOsfT6kC0ylnzSWTo2RnrEH51AVWoNRCl7YbxbJ6EUICcBn0Y4GrZIqB6MhJR9utPNUnzF3EgJdUX5YzsgOy8FBFZylCViaM9u7lKDhuaoEzUraooDKPjubru5Im93KZi_Jfr5XH-sx8hDKHT0315O2LY8y2WjRvOzWIHhPtDQLZArDGODiOGjI1ksxgm9rhflvBY_0QeWI-al846qd1ODuwZuKu5YmkN63mbOBPS_aVCkFpI7QoD2WkMs6BjIzQQY9lIayrdtrQLLFecvLOM-mkD0D5VkWJi06uugiJ41QuAkYbkJ0QFsMPkIV4lLmWjfDBr8udotFp-cDqO8XQPW6YZirckeFtk4I6RkMdF8miW1TYGo=w1226-h919-no)

If you're a Chrome user, try right click and "Copy Image Address".

This does correspond with an earlier post but it seems to work for me.
