Fall and Winter Photography
« Reply #-1 on: November 18, 2014, 04:36:26 PM »
Nov 18 2014

Yes fall and winter; that’s the way it’s supposed to be.  I think this year Mother Nature has it mixed up! Monday morning we woke up to about 2+ inches of snow; we got a little more through the day but it stayed around 32 deg. so it wasn’t too bad.

Monday night the temperatures fell and we got wind with 30 mph gusts. I think it might have hit single digits overnight. At 10 AM it was just 13 deg. It has been windy all day today.  Mother Nature never let my pear tree shed its leaves; some still green, before winter came. A lot of the leaves have been blowing off today.

I think all of you out there are seeing colder than normal temps, 49 states reported freezing temperatures!

Monday morning it was pretty out, the wet snow with no wind let it stick to everything. Then Tuesday with all the wind as I sat on my back porch looking out; the leaves from my pear tree looked pretty on top of the snow. I took a picture of them and enhanced a little with Photoshop elements; adjusted light levels, sharpened and made the color of the leaves stand out more with a filter. I added a white border with a drop shadow. I thought it looked nice and showed that Mother Nature was a little mixed up this year.

Monday morning

We have been having a cold spell here in Alabama, got down into the low 20's which is brutal for us. It is 37  out there now and I don't even want to go out and get the mail. You can keep all that white stuff up there.

Oh Don, that is just lovely!!   I love the picture with the leaves on the snow.  Beautiful colors.  Haven't messed with Photoshop at all, though I know you can do some great enhancements to photos.

We've had about a week of being in the low 20s at night, and we got some pretty nasty freezing rain for a couple of days in there.   Our little red maple out front had kept it's gorgeous red leaves on late this year, and it ended up looking like blown glass after the rains.

Knock on wood, so far we've kept the water lines in the barn from freezing, and it's supposed to warm back up above freezing the rest of the week!

Great looking photos from you both. Kat, I would rather have a foot of snow than that freezing rain, it is pretty but much more dangerous and destructive than snow.

I'm with you on the snow vs. freezing rain!!  We're lucky that we didn't lose any power lines or major tree branches!

This is for Kat and others to see what a little touch up with a photo program can do for your digital photos. Most digital cameras do not get the lighting levels right on for a great photo. I use Photoshop Elements to correct this and do an unsharp mask, which actually sharpens the edges. That's about all I do to my photos. I liked her leaf photo so I downloaded it and the first photo all I did was, correct the level, gave it a little soft light, and did the edge sharpening.

I played with this second one and did this in about 10 minutes. I used the first photo and traced the leaf, made a layer of just the leaf on top of the original, I gave the leaf a drop shadow. Then I blurred the bottom layer and then merged the two layers to get this. It would have been better if I would have traced the whole branch the leaf was on.

Beautiful pics, We made it down to 29 here on the coast of Alabama. Too cold ... But, we are headed back up to 70 by Saturday. Our weather changes by the hour...
Not a good sign for any of us to be so cold so soon.
But those are really nice pics!
