I'll preface by saying I have only cooked on two different brands and would like to try more - - - -

The short of it based on my limited exposure is that my favorite is the Blazin Grill Works Grand Slam.

I have cooked on an original Oregon-based Traegger and the Blazin Grill Works Grand Slam.  I personally prefer the Grand Slam. I like the heavy heavy gauge steal, the counterwieghted double wall hood, upper rack, and I love that I can pull out the burn pot and clean it without taking out the racks and drip pan - probably my favorite feature overall.

I would, however, love to experiment on more of them - I find both the Mak and Memphis particularly interesting.

I have looked at these from afar many times. Has anyone compared the start up time for cooking things like steaks or burgers on these? There is also some variability on the upper temp range for steak searing. Since I am used to my CharBroil that hits close to 750-800, I was wondering if you notice any difference?

Does anyone have or use a Cookshack pellet grill?

My Memphis is insulated and has a temp range of 150F to 600F

I used to have a 4 burner RED but after using my Memphis for a short time I no longer needed it and sold my RED.

We have two pellet grills, but my favorite is the MAK 1 Star all the way.  I absolutely love its versatility and optional accessories such as the FlamZone drip pan, and MAK griddle. It puts out enough smoke to be able to smoke bacon, hams, sausage, etc., or I can grill some steaks.

Cookshack makes good equipment and gets great reviews.  Made in USA.  The PG500 uses smaller "zones" for dedicated cooking types.  The original FE is still a wide-range high quality cooker, and the FEC100 is a staple of competition and commercial use for smoking.  Memphis (Hearthland Industries -- American made, too) cookers have high top ranges and get/stay there quickly thanks to great controllers and good insulation.  Some other brands get close to that range.  As pellet cookers become more popular the manufacturers are improving the breed to be more versatile but you still need to shop carefully to fit your cooker to your needs.

If you'd like to make a well-informed purchase, read my articles here about pellet cooking starting with http://www.letstalkbbq.com/index.php?topic=2641.0

One of my reluctance in getting a pellet grill is that I live in Florida and I hear that the humidity  in Florida tends to clog the pellets. Any thoughts on this?

Urban myth  >:(

The moisture content of the ambient air will not degrade pellets.  Direct contact with water will make them first "melt" then turn into something resembling wooden concrete once they dry, however.  Store pellets where they won't get rained on or have water run in on them, preferably in the plastic bags in which they are packaged or in well-sealed containers (I use a kitty litter bin sometimes).  Pellets left in the cooker will not disintegrate or degrade unless water gets into the hopper.  Humidity is no big deal.

I've had my rectec mini since they first came out and with just my wife and I most of the time it works fantastic. However with a fifteen pound packer brisket it handles this like a pro when I have a house full.
It's just set and forget ( almost) !! A great cheap purchase.

I have just had my Traeger and love it. No problem with pellets & humidity. The past month or two we have had humid Fla.weather and no problem. I store my pellets in a plastic tub that will hold 40 lbs. in the garage. Don

This is my first and only, but I've had the PelletPro for a little over a year and have not had one regret. Excellent quality  PelletPros have their own proprietary PID controller - heats up fast and does a great job of maintaining temp. Great people to work with too. The smaller grill, which I own, gives you 770 sqft of grilling space with the full size upper rack.

I was at Lowes last week and of course I found the BBQ section  ;)    A guy was loading up on Char-Griller pellets. He told me he gets them for his Char-Griller pellet grill which he also got at Lowes. Said it has worked perfectly out of the box and he has had it for a year now with no problems. All for under 500 bucks.

I checked it out. Looks like a Traeger knock off (like that hasn't been done before  ;D) it has wagon wheels and looks like if covered and maintained it would last a good long spell....................
