Swiss steak and the best mashed taters
« Reply #-1 on: October 11, 2015, 06:34:22 PM »
This old dog learned a new trick today for mashed taters.....steam them. I have always boiled them.....not anymore.

This removes the risk of soggy taters. Now I just have to figure out a contraption to make larger quantities for holidays.  These really are distinctly different as they really suck in the butter.

Swiss steak was something I hadn't made before. Adapted from this recipe as I added mushrooms. It was very good. Here is the link.

That looks incredible!

Ans - if you have a tamale pot,  or a steamer insert you can can steam 'taters too! ;)

See:  http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/anolon-reg-classic-stainless-steel-universal-covered-steamer-insert/1042018520

OR...one of these if you have a pot of the correct size.    http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Steaming-Stand-Cooker-Silver/dp/B00880DY2A/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1444603642&sr=8-9&keywords=tamale+pot

I would like a plate plz.  Looks great.

I'm with Sparky!!  I could use a spoon or two of peas, however.  The plate needs more green.

Pappy - that look down right edible!!!.  Thanks for sharing.

Growing up as a kid my mother always fixed "Swiss steak" but it had more of a mushroom gravy sauce.  Then the first time I had Swiss steak at my wife's (then girlfriend - MANY years ago) parent's home it was more like your recipe.  Both were super good.  Always interesting to see individual takes on a dish.  That's what makes this forum fun.

Great meal, Pappy! I haven't tried steaming taters, but will now. I also haven't had Swiss Steak in years - sounds like a perfect dinner for a cool evening. Thanks!

Gotta do it. The potatoes come out quite dry and then suck in butter, cream, or whatever......like a sponge. Very different and better results.
