My Latest Gourmet SOS Meal
« Reply #-1 on: February 05, 2017, 11:31:35 AM »
Lots of new folks on the forum.  Time to share my latest Gourmet SOS pictures and, of course, the recipe.  It is worth making.  I did double the recipe since I will be traveling soon and wanted to leave some good groceries for Mrs. ACW3 t eat while I am gone.

Recipe By: Art Wiesemann

Ingredients:

8 ounces dried beef
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons minced onion
3 tablespoons flour
2 cups milk
1/4 teaspoon paprika
2 tablespoons dry sherry
sour dough toast

Directions:

1. Melt butter.  Coarse chop the dried beef.

2. Saute onions until transparent.

3. Sprinkle flour over onions and melted butter.

4. Add milk slowly, stirring.

5. Add dried beef and simmer until ingredients thicken.

6. Remove from heat and season with paprika and sherry.

7. Serve on hot buttered sour dough toast.

One pound of Groff’s Meat Market dried beef ready to be added to the pot.

Sweating some sweet onions down in butter.

Dried beef into the pot.

My wife likes chives with her SOS.

I like chopped green onions, if they are available.

Now if Tommy (TMB) ever has the official LTBBQ celebration of his cooking shed, I will bring the fixings and make a batch of my Gourmet SOS for everyone.  What do you think, Tommy?

Is it even possible that this is better than your prior version??? I think you need to prove it to me! ;) Just tell me what time it will be ready - I will be the dummy on the front porch with a large drool-pool at my feet. :D :D :D

That is some mighty fine looking SOS.
Talking about missing SOS I was out in the boonies in VN and after about a week I was sitting there eating C-Rats for breakfast.
I thought man I wish I had some SOS for breakfast.

Now Art, the look of your SOS beats any I have seen so I am coping your recipe.  :)

Where does one get the dried beef? Canned?

Actually, I get mine when I go to PA from a butcher shop.  It is lightly salted and smoked just right.  The jarred dried beef is okay, but it tends to be very salty.  I don't need extra salt in my diet.

There must be a butcher shop in your area, someplace.  Good luck.
