Why I don't Buy Spare Ribs
« Reply #-1 on: April 06, 2012, 07:31:31 PM »
I have always bought spare ribs , trimmed & cooked the trimmings for snacks etc.
Ran the numbers.
On Sale BB ribs @ $3.00 / lb or my favorite St Louis style for $3.00/ lb are cheaper than spares @
$ 1.80 .
Instead of cooking the trimmings I like pork steaks much better.

Man, I would love to find Baby Backs (or loin Backs) on sale for $3.00/lb! Around here Baby Backs/Loin Backs are usually $3.99/lb on sale; double what spares go for.

So, I just get the whole spares & trim them to a St. Louis cut myself.

I know a lot of people throw the trimmings away but we use them. The skirt flap & end trimmings get cut & frozen for stir fry, or ground for sausage. I'll either save the rib tips for later cooks or cook them alongside the ribs and they disappear just as quickly.

Last year ( at different times) both BB ribs & St. Louis were on sale from $2.79 to $3.19 several times.
I have a "wild game " 9 cu foot chest that due to my bad hunting / fishing skills  wasn't full! Bought 15 racks of each in cryo vans.
Still have about 8 left.
Memorial day will restock.

Pam, I'll have to look for it since I have not done it in awhile.  Will post when I do.  Dee
