I think I'm going to buy an extra grate and do this...

I had already thought about it. I'm going to look around and see if I can find any interesting alternatives first. Hanging a rack and doing wings at the same time would be cool if that's what I wanted to do. More likely a small pan of baked beans nestled on one side. ;)

Are you clicking on the IMG tag - to the right of the picture you selected to post Paul? When you click on it - it should say - "copied" in that line

I like the idea. I would modify it so the half of the rack is hinged. That way you can lift off the half or put it back in when needed.

Anyone know offhand what the diameter of the grate is? I wonder of a hovergrill fits in there ok. I Have one, I'll try it out she I get home. That would make it possible to grate ribs and such on one, and wings on another, or whatever. More  grate capacity.

They'll be scratching their heads next week saying "wonder why everyone is ordering new grates all in the sudden?"

I did that to mine and it works perfectly. I bought a weber grate on Amazon and they look identical. Now I have a full rack and my modified half rack. Just make sure when you cut it to leave the whole outer ring intact for strength

Sounds like a great modification, thanks for sharing.  ;)
