Question about new porcelain coated barrel
« Reply #-1 on: February 24, 2015, 12:31:17 AM »
For those of you that have the new porcelain coated barrel, is the inside and outside bottom of the barrel porcelain covered as well or just the outside?  What about the underside of the lid?  Thanks.

I have one. I can for sure say the inside of the lid is NOT porcelain coated. I don't think the inside of the barrel is coated either at all. And the bottom is just a guess, but I would imagine it's coated like the rest of the barrel (I never bothered to look at the bottom...).

In my mind, the next logical question is: Does one need to occasionally "season" the PBC like one does a charcoal grill?

No need to season a PBC.
And I'm no expert but I see no need to season grills, smokers etc. They will get better with regular use.

Seasoning only speeds up a naturally occurring process. Part of it is to satisfy our feeling that we are doing something to help the cooker do a better job. Part of it is to help burn off any aromas/flavors that the manufacturing process may have contributed ( but that usually is the first 30 minutes - 2 hours of a "break-in" burn).

Mostly...I think it is tradition. ;)

Maybe Noah or Amber will stick their head in the door here and give us the first hand answers on the coating....?

The inside has a light dusting of coating this is purely cosmetic and is to prevent any rusting on the inside should it sit in a retail store for a while. There is no need to season the PBC. Thank you, PBC Co.

To add to this, the horseshoe stand is porcelain coated as well. The coating is Weber quality. The light coating is a nice touch to basically protect the inside from rusting during transit. Your first cook will start to season the inside of the barrel. Other changes has to do with the horseshoes. They are now bolted to the barrel instead of welded which gives the barrel a "Cleaner" look. The charcoal basket has been changed from expanded metal to rod type grates which will last longer.

I have to say for the heavier gauge barrel with the coating and the improvement to the charcoal basket for only a 10.00 price increase and still getting free shipping is just unheard of......Noah and Amber could have easily bumped up the price greatly and chose to keep the PBC priced so everyone can have one  :) :)

To add to the PBC love, they offer the porcelain coated barrel upgrade for existing owners. They did not have to do that to increase more sales so we can get the "latest and greatest"

Noah and Amber are quality folk and they clearly added that to their business model  :)

My wife was  little skeptical when I ordered a $300 barrel. I have many cooking toys at our home in PA but only a cheap gas grill and an Old Smokey grill here I found new in a goodwill store for $10. When the PBC arrived she was actually quite impressed with the look and finish (and the US Army logo on the barrel as requested). She has since been very please with the quality of the food it has produced. I am still learning.. My WSM is indestructible and seems this will be too. I need to do ribs again......

What does this mean  ? : "To add to the PBC love, they offer the porcelain coated barrel upgrade for existing owners. They did not have to do that to increase more sales so we can get the "latest and greatest"

* I have a 4 month old PBC that probably was produced just before the new design / production facility went into effect .

Chris they will sell you just the new barrel and lid for a discounted price so existing owners can upgrade to the new porcelain coated one. You don't get the rebar, hooks, basket, etc.

Thank you ! ...I see now there is another entry on the same subject .
While this is a gracious offer  by PBC management - I want to keep my last generation PBC plus acquire the new generation PBC as well !!  ... * I told my wife that Amber@PBC was going to start  offering  PBC's in new designer colors - my wife's reply was for me  to ask Amber for a divorce lawyer referral !! ... Gosh - did I say something wrong ? (lol)
