Uuni 2 wood fired pizza oven
« Reply #-1 on: August 17, 2014, 01:56:36 PM »
So after a long wait it is finally here! Let's get started with my review. The first part will not include a pizza cook. I will add a pizza cook later today.

The delivery box...

All package pretty tightly...

Assembly blueprint. I was able to follow it pretty easily. I do good with pictures...

Oh no dreaded laser film...

The aluminum baking steel...

Two pizza peels. Comes with one but I got two for being a pre-order...

Everything found packed inside...

Really shiny interior. Not for long...

Parts...

Inner wall...

Chimney and extension in case you need more draft...

After removing the annoying laser film. Had flashbacks to when my Memphis was delivered...

All the fasteners and tools needed for assembly...

First installed the legs bracket...

Now the leg...

Repeat 3 more times...

Interior wall slides in...

Then attaches inside with a small bolt on top...

Picture of chimney port. The interior wall covers it partially...

Interior wall installed...

Hopper tube installed. It is adjustable in height so it can be placed just above the pellet hopper. And yes I now noticed the hopper is installed upside down...

You can see it is just above the upside down hopper...

The chimney locks into place by rotation...

Backing plate installed onto pizza steel. Keeps pellets off...

Pizza steel installed. The gap between the floor and the steel allows for heat retention by acting as another interior wall and heat to travel between the floor and steel...

Hopper cover with built-in scoop. Just had to install the wooden handle with a wood screw. I like the scoop. Very easy to load pellets with...

Slides right in...

Backing plate installed to door panel...

Then the handle attaches...

And there she is. She is a beauty...

With exhaust extension!

Hold off posting I am making the test fire part now. Just a few minutes...

Looks great, Mike.  My wife wants to see what one looks like.  I think I may be making the final sales pitch shortly for an early birthday present.

Now time for a test fire. The pellets that came with the unit I don't care for. They smell kind of funny, are really large and diameter, and are full of moisture. I can tell by how difficult they were to light. But they will work for a test fire and burn off of the unit.

I loaded the hopper pretty heavy to get an idea of how hot she will get...

And now comes the MAPP Gas Torch...

Took over a minute to get a good flame with these pellets! Like I said a lot of moisture...

I let them burn with the hopper lid off for 5 minutes before adding pellets to the hopper...

In goes the pellets. I filled it to the very top...

After 5 more minutes she was going good. I only used the standard chimney and did not use the extension. I think the extension may help to get the flame going quicker if you use it but once it gets going IMHO it is not needed.

Here is the reading on the aluminum pizza steel. You think that is hot enough? I sure do!

I plan on making a couple of pizzas for lunch later. I will post them on here after I make them.

My initial thoughts are I am very impressed. He has really made some great improvements and the temp gets as hot if not hotter as the fan assisted Uuni 1.

Assembly was not that difficult. And the tools needed for assembly are included.

Could be packaged a bit better. Must have had a rough ride over the pond and on some parts that shows. Might just be bad handling by the shipper too.

Looks pretty durable. Well riveted and with the new folding legs it is very stable.

Like the new wooden handle design for the door panel. And the scoop built into the hopper lid is great.

Love the removable and dishwasher safe steel. That thing is gonna make a great crust I am sure!

I will have more comments once the pizzas are made later ;)

LOL, Muebe, I should have just waited for you to assemble yours, would have made it easier for me!
I am going to try it with other pellets tonight to see if it burns better.

Does not require a fan. Just uses natural drafting with the chimney.

Here we are with the pizzas. Made a pulled pork, BBQ sauce, and cheese. The other was pepperoni, red sauce, and cheese.

Here is the pepperoni getting heat treated...

The pulled pork one. I did not wait long enough for the Uuni to warm up completely so I had a little problem with this one but it was still good...

I noticed the pulled pork did get crispy. Nice heat from above. I think the double wall really helps...

The pepperoni one came out perfect. I think it was only 3 minutes total time. The Uuni was up to temp for this one. The pepperoni was nice and crispy also but not burned...

Final thoughts. This unit meets and excels it's predecessor. The only thing is it seems to take a bit longer to get going than the first Uuni. I imagine this is due to not have a fan to assist things along. I did not use the chimney extension either so maybe that would have helped. But it did go a lot easier on the pellets. It probably used 1/3 less pellets than the other Uuni and got just as hot! Although the first unit did not use a whole lot of pellets either so this is very impressive.

For anyone looking for a authentic wood fired pizza cooker in a portable size this unit is a must buy ;)

Thanks muebe. Those pies look great, especially the 2nd one. It looks like it is important to let the oven get plenty hot - no problem. Getting pretty excited to try mine.

Nice write up Michael. When I looked at the pictures on the website I thought the handle for the pellet scoop was a piece of firewood dropped down the chute.

Good review, muebe - looks like the Uuni 2 delivers a beautiful wood-fired pizza

Take plenty of pictures, David!
