Salt Plates?
« Reply #-1 on: August 04, 2016, 01:55:53 PM »
Ok, I have stared at these at my local ace hardware and wondered, What does this chunk of salt really do?  Does it sear better than Cast Iron or Grill Grates? Does it eliminate the need for any seasoning since you are cooking on a piece of salt? Or is this some goofy new trend that someone is trying to cash in on and if so why didn't I think of that?  :D

Ok folks educate me!  :)

I read this about a Himalayan Salt Plate...

Mineral-rich pink Himalayan salt adds delicate flavor to food.
Retains hot and cold temperatures evenly.
Harvested from ancient Himalayan sea salt deposits.
Heat on the grill to cook thin cuts of meat, fish and shellfish.
Chill in the refrigerator to serve cold appetizers, cheese, sushi and fruit.
Naturally anti-microbial and easy to clean.

I don't know about the plates but there are salt blocks that are for cooking on. They take a while to get hot but store a lot of thermal energy once heated. Salt flavor is infused into the food your cooking.

I have done this type of cooking at a restaurant where they place the heated block of salt and then you cook your meats and seafood. I did enjoy it but feel it is more for fun then a replacement to cooking. I have also cooked on a hot stone before. Same feeling as the block.

Kind of cool and fun to do but the blocks do take some time to heat up. A 500F oven works best. And the block needs to be thick to retain all that energy.

They are prone to cracking if heated or cooled too quickly also.

I went to this restaurant up in Banff Canada, they served you very unique cuts of meat you cook on a 600 degree rock they bring to your table..

We had a thread on salt planks a while back (link here). I got one several years ago and eventually wrote it off as more trouble than it was worth. We found that the meat we cooked on it was too salty for us. It's fun to play with for a while and does hold heat/cold well but takes a lot of time and care and is relatively fragile. Jes' sayin'.

I have an Island Grillstone made of lava that I won online...great to cook on and for cleanup, when it's cool just turn it over before your next cook..cleans itself and you can cook anything on it..I just leave it on the grill and no problems.    .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.
