What does your Handle mean?
« Reply #-1 on: December 09, 2012, 09:18:19 AM »

I get some questions about this from time to time, so I'll go first.

--

Mine requires some imagery and a bit of a sad story to explain...

One of my old cats - Squirt - was diagnosed with diabetes a few years ago. Cats (and dogs) use the same insulin that humans use, so I started getting my supplies at Walgreens. Talking with the pharmacist about this, they recommended a 'Prescription Savings Program' that is for non-insured members of the family - including pets.

So I get this card in the mail..

The name stuck. (we ended up losing him to cancer back in 2010, but 'SquirtTheCat' lives on)

He still gets mail from time to time!  ;D

That is a priceless story Squirt!! I bet Squirt got the best care possible!! I have a sickly cockatiel that keeps me at the vet more than I care to be, but you do what you got to do!!

The name of Smokeasaurus comes from some weird quirk I got...for example, my friend Pam, I call the Pamster, Chris, I call Chrisapotamus..........so you can see how I named myself............I got funny names for all my buds... ;)

LostArrow is the name of my hunting camp.
I old style cook there at least 20 weekends a year in a big homemade barrel smoker.
The cooker didn't even have a thermometer till 2 years ago & the meat thermometers I took got lost or broken!
Most commen cook is 2 butts or a half wild hog.
Pic is of my old golden who "guarded " the cooking deck.

Squirt thanks for starting this thread. Your story brought a smile. This is my "bio" pertaining to the name CB as found in most spots where there is room for me to place the disclaimer.

About once a week or so I get a letter asking me about the nickname “CB.” More than one skeptic has suggested it’s a marketing gimmick to match up with the sponsor. The truth is I’ve had the moniker for more than 25 years – given to me by a group of room mates when we were just getting started in our business careers and all lived in a big house by the beach. None of the others knew very much about cooking and I knew just a bit more. After a few months it seemed the meal plans were my responsibility and all the guys started calling me “Chef Barry.”

While I have worked in a variety of restaurants and cultivated an appreciation for fine cuisine as a head waiter and wine steward at both French and American restaurants - I am not a professionally trained chef and I believe that word "chef" should only be used to describe folks who have seriously trained and mastered a wide range of skills. In truth they "earn" it. For me, it's a nick-name I've had for more than 30 years by which I have become known to readers and use to sign my recipes and columns. If you are a trained cook and have earned the title of Chef - I apologize for any suggestion that my humble skill-sets and experiences might be confused with those that you have mastered.

The bottom line is I’m just a guy who really enjoys cooking and serving food to his friends and family. When I write about recipes for grilling, smoking or Q’ing…it’s because these are recipes I prepare. Now I expect there are many folks who are better cooks than me…and certainly you may be one of them. I just try to share some of my experiences to (hopefully) encourage you to take on the challenges of grilling, or Q’ing or smoking food that pleases you and delights your friends and family. I cook what I enjoy eating and I’m always interested in expanding my understanding and appreciation of food!
