Title: A new hobby for the wife and I
Post by: RG on September 19, 2020, 04:31:05 PM
I have been wanting Stephanie to get into making crafts for a while and during this pandemic I figured it'd be as good of a time as any. I am an essential worker so my work flow hasn't been interrupted. She, on the other hand, is a housewife used to having lots of free time to go out and about but that has been limited up until recently.

The idea of making crafts entered into my head again and then ultimately she agreed that we should get some equipment. We started very small and then decided to expand and now she's actually making things and selling them! I have made some sales from a Facebook group I am a part of and she has done the same. It feels good to have her bring in some income, lol! It's small potatoes for now, but maybe it'll expand to where she does fairly well.

We're actually going to open an Etsy store at some point, once she gets enough inventory to sell. So far it's been custom stuff but that's cool too!

I'm not trying to pedal product here, I'm just excited about it I guess, lol!

Good for you guys. Nothing better than doing something you like and making some money on it.

It's been satisfying so far, she's thrilled that she's making a little money, lol!

There's been a learning curve to learning the equipment and software, mistakes have been made but that's how you learn!

We made this for a friend of ours, it's his 2 bloodhounds. This was before stain and poly.

I made this for a lady to give to her husband for his birthday. It's their motorcycles. It's on live edge wood, looks far better in person!

I've got some other things coming so we'll be able to make more neat things soon (after I waste material learning of course!)

Great idea.  Kimmies been doing a lot of crafts lately and keeping her mom busy since her dad passed away a couple years ago.   So this pandemic in away has been good to her mom

Bad for me though since I get picked to do all the painting lol

I’ll post hers in another thread

Well, it's many things she's doing. Laser cutting wood into shapes/designs as well as photo etching on various wood. She's been making custom signs, jewelry. I have a CNC router coming as well so that'll allow us to do bigger designs.

She can make a 49er sign out of wood?.  Would love to put that outside my house in Washington.   Seahawks
fans could suck it.

Here are some signs she made for a FB group she's an admin of. Some people wanted their last name on them, one guy is a Steelers fan. She's got a few more to make I think. She enjoys it and that makes me happy :)

Thanks Rich! She's getting better/faster at it. I can't wait until she gets full blown into it and we get all facets of it in play. I am really excited to do 3D carvings once I get the cnc router set up. It's a whole new venture for us, a hobby that's gotten out of hand it seems, lol.

That is true but in all honesty, this is meant to be something for her to make money with, so as she learns and gets to make things for friends and family, she can earn a little for her efforts and I am cool with that! :)

It has been enjoyable making things that look fantastic and it gives you a sense of accomplishment as well. I have some BIG ideas coming up, we'll see if I can execute them or not, lol!

This one, or similar takes a couple of hours start to finish. Designing art, etching and finishing.

Y'all can look up my wife's craft page on facebook if you like, to see what she's up to. She's very creative and has some cool things in the works.

https://www.facebook.com/Fairly-Cute-Crafts-151679003294832

She's going to making some Farm House stuff soon (popular with the ladies, men....not so much, lol)

She's also got some very cool Christmas Ornaments she's about to offer up. She's a busy lady. I am trying to help where I can :)

I certainly don't want to come off as a salesman but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't proud of her ;) For those who have inquired about items, thank you!

I don't care about you buddy.  Lol....  just trying to help you wife. Since you made my great 49er sign maybe you should get a cut.  Im looking forward to getting more cool wood pieces from ya.  Next i need one for the side of my house were i park my truck that says "49er parking only."

That is beautiful!

Thank you! It turned out quite nice, pics actually don't do it justice. The wood grain looks nice I think. We've got more live edge wood coming today, really been "burning" through it, lol!

I have some custom pieces to do for some friends and I am going to do one of my son's pride and joy, his Mustang. I just need him to take a really good photo for me to work with. I may take his keys and find a nice spot to do some "glamour" shots of it, the only issue is that I feel the need to misbehave when I drive it ;)

I hope you'll post a pic of the Mustang carving, but I understand your "need to misbehave".  ;)
I had a Roush Mustang for 14 years. I enjoyed it, but am really more of a truck girl.  The Mustang is gone now,
but I still have the F-150 Flareside I bought brand new in 1992.
That one is my baby and is pretty much a garage queen now. LOL
Maybe I should commission a carving for it.   I'll check her Facebook page to see if that's an option for me.  :)

I might make one of my truck for myself. She's a big girl but I can fit her on there I think, lol.

And my son's Mustang is very photogenic!

I want to take a picture of the top of it, looking down, one from the front, one from the back and a side pic and make a collage for him.

I have a new tool in the garage (the wife's craft room has spilled over into where she used to park, lol).

I have designed a simple sign for a buddy of mine that has struck out on his own and opened an auto repair shop. He has been super awesome to me over the years and I am beyond excited for him so I wanted to give him something for his place.

I have yet to carve it but it's ready to go when I have time to babysit the machine.

The lettering will be elevated (same height as the uncarved wood) and the carved out recess will be color filled, not sure which color yet. I am thinking about making the letters red, white and blue, the wrenches silver and not sure about the car or the "frame" yet. I may just leave the frame portion natural with a poly coat or stain it.

Suggestions are welcome!

I have decided to paint the inlay red, the letters white, the wrenches silver and the car black. The border will be stained and all will be clear coated. It should look great. I am just waiting on a v-bit I ordered to show up. I'll post the finished product when done.

Thank You Bob! Very nice of you to say. I'd say it's mutual, he's a very nice fellow and hard not to like him. He's always been super honest and fair with me, I try to send work his way, especially now that he left Goodyear. I hope he likes it, I plan on giving it to him the next time I go get my oil changed :)

Flattery will get you everywhere but I am far from a pro :P

It's like anything, you mess some stuff up and eventually you figure some stuff out. It turned out good enough I suppose. So far, my favorite thing I made is the little shelf unit/display that I put in the basement. It has little mini arcade games on it and is LED backlit. Not bad for winging it. I had it posted on here I think but it disappeared due to the crash. I see several posts missing on here.

Still making junk to put down in the mancave. I made this sign and a little shelf to hold little "barcade" games. I think it turned out decent.

My phone lens is cracked so it creates ghosting (no pun intended) in low light pictures.

Here's a brief video showing it in action :

One of these days I will have the thing completed :P
