Title: Grill Grate now a permanent part of my Grill2Go
Post by: TMB on April 08, 2013, 11:14:27 PM
Since adding the GrillGrates to my Grill2Go grill I have really enjoyed cooking with the grill.

Now they are bolted in and ready for action!

I even had enough room for pellets to be dropped in the front for smoking!

You make me want to start using the grill grates. I've seen you and others using them but never really understood the benefits

The major benefit is moving the "sizzle" (source of much grilled flavor) much closer to the meat.  Nice grill marks are a benefit, too, but don't add to the flavor.  I think they improve grilled meat flavor on almost any type of grill but especially gassers where all you're getting is heat, anyway.

Grill Grates are one of the best accessories around...imho...they are great for charcoal and gassers and pellet cookers......you cut down on flare ups for one thing in a charcoal grill. You can actually get more flavor in a gas grill and they make a pellet grill a mean searing machine............. ;)

GG's have one significant problem, though.  They are screaming buggers to clean, especially if you don't do it fairly often.  I have a welding brush that I use to clean between the rails but I still have to take them off every now and then and put them in a plastic bag full of oven cleaner then hit them with the garden spray (hard) the next day.  Nirvana would be GG's that could go in the dishwasher!

If I turn the G2G all the way up and heat them very well they come clean.  Now, I have not had them that long but so far for me easy to keep clean

Why can't you put them in the dishwasher?

Why can't you put them in the dishwasher?

The manufacturer states that the dishwasher detergent is bad for the special metal cladding on the rails and will cause it to pit.  I'm sure this is true because one needs to be careful about what goes into dishwasher detergent.  It is powerful stuff and I've got some gadgets and pans that suffered in there.  I did finally find a couple of non-stick skillets that can handle it, though!

Pam, there are 22 in if I remember right (remember I can't remember nothing anymore)  ;)

Just measure from end to end on your factor grate and give them a call

Tommy,

I've used my GG on the G2G as well and like them. But I also like moving them to some other cookers as needed. So, I was wondering why the decision to bolt them in? Was it to make cleaning easier?

Two reasons, one was to make cleaning easier and second when I would move the grill around the grates would slide around and bump the lid making noise.  Kimmie hates noise like that  ;)

I do have another set of grates I use for my BEESR's and can also use them for any other grill I have.  I am looking into the 18 in grates for my Triple chef pellet grill.
