Title: Mod for the SRG (w/smoker box) & the BEESR
Post by: TMB on September 11, 2013, 02:18:59 PM
Well I'm testing the new mod right now as I type this out.     So far it's going good,  not sure how much more smoke it will add or if it will do as I want but that's the fun and y'all are going to read it as it happens  ???  Scary ain't it  ;)

Since the new SRG and the BEESR have a hard time of keeping the smoker box going I thought I would fix the issue since CharBroil won't

So here is the start of the new mod.........

First remove the box handle from the box then remove the lower bolt. Now that the unit is in three pieces drill for holes in the fron cover and six holes in the smoker box it's self then put the unit back together.

It's filled and running on setting 15 now , good smoke so far and none out of the holes.  I was thinking with possitive pressure I would have some leaking smoke but so far so good.

Will post in a few mins now that the unit is at 10 setting (i'm doing the 15-10-8 method) to test with

OK 45 mins now since  setting 10 and still rolling smoke very well!

Turned to setting 8 so lets see what happens  :D

It's now 2:58 my ti me and the BEESR is still kicking out smoke.  So far this mod has done what I wanted it to do.

The picture is a little hard to see but it is showing the pellets used up to this poin. It also shows how even it burned them.  On a normal cook I find some of the pellets are not burned up but not this one all are burning and at a very good rate!

I'm guessing 3 to 4 hrs of smoke with this mod before a refill is needed

Great tommy!!!

I am looking forward to seeing more about this mod!

Tell us - will it work on other members of the Big Easy/SRG family as well? Or will there be other designs for those? I think you have a winner here -

It will work only with the SRG and the BEESR since they are the only ones with the box installed from the factory.

Now that being said, Todd (A-Maz'n Smoker)  and  I are working now on a product that willl fix the older SRG's for smoking.  This unit should be out soon and if it works like the proto type it should be a winner

By the way , I was able to go 2 1/2 hrs of smoke but I had to pull the box out cause Kimmie came home and was ready to go back to the mountain.   i'll run more test this weekend

My BEESR just arrived from Lowe's...Less than 100 bucks shipped!  I can't wait to season it and start smoking some butts.

Should I go ahead and modify the smoker box?  Sounds like there's no harm in it...

I'm new here but thanks Tommy for sharing your experience and knowledge about the Big Easy cookers.  Your posts here and on the CharBroil forums convinced me to buy the BEESR.

Look forward to sharing cooks soon.

I'd cook with it first and see how yours works out.  If there is not enough smoke or long enough smoke then go for it. It's an easy fix to put it back to factory

Hey Tommy, first excuse me if this comment seems dumb ;D
So because of the differential pressure between the inside of the SRG and atmospheric pressure, it will force the smoke/flow into the SRG. Is that correct?
I never use the smoker box because it doesn't really get any smoke inside the SRG. Really looking forward on more feedback on this mod.
Thanks.

With the SRG and the BEESR both have side vents instead of a top vent,  I don't know why but they do.  Hot air goes up not sideways so I don't understand why Charbroil put a vent on the side.

Now with a side vent hot air goes up then back down because of high pressure being built up in the chamber
Now if you have seen my SRG's both have a 4 in hole in the top with a movable lid so I can control the amount of air going out.  I'm going to mod one of my BEESR's with this type vent and leave the other just as the factory made it to prove I'm right.   This will prove that with the smoker mod the smoke box will breath better and have more flow that the factory box does. By cutting the hole/vent I will relieve the high pressure and cause a low pressure which will pull air into the chamber thus creating more smoke.

I will have the next mode done soon and show the difference then I will mod both my BEESR's ;)

Hi TMB.  I have a silly question.   What size drill bit did you use for the holes?   I don't want to make mine too large or small.   Thanks in advance!

Cleaning up the forum took pictures off that were not from hosting sites such as Photo Bucket and so forth. This freed up ban width and saves $$$$ in the long run
If you would like to see the picture P.M me Ill be happy to show them .

I would like to see what you've done also. My SRG is relatively smoke-free and I would like to change that. If you wouldn't mind throwing in a pic of your whole set up (i.e. the holes in the grill and the movable lid), I would appreciate it.

Tommy are you adding more holes to the inner chamber as well or just letting it go up and around through the gas vents into the lid?

why did the admin delete your pictures?

We have made the announcement a few times, but - I think that many of us forget that when you upload photos to LTBBQ - that means that he site "hosts'' them. It requires extra bandwidth. If we all did this - we would go over our bandwidth limits with our hosting service.
SO - we strongly...STRONGLY recommend that you post your pictures on Photobucket, Picasa, or any dedicated photo hosting site - then, copy the IMG link - and paste it to you post on LTBBQ.
This way - the photo hosting site is still hosting the photo, and it does not impact our bandwidth costs.
Every 90 days or so - we have to review the bandwidth usage, and will usually  have to "trim" ( delete ) any photos that are hosted here because they are not hosted by a dedicated photo hosting site.
If you have further questions about posting pictures so that they remain viewable - please post those, and one of the Admins. or Moderators will see that you get assistance with this.
