French Fry Alternatives?
« Reply #-1 on: July 02, 2013, 03:55:39 PM »
Our Independence Day meal is going to be very simple this year.  Mainly centered around hot dogs.  I love French Fries but I changed my dietary habits a few years ago and now don't eat them any more.  I was wondering what type of alternatives with potatoes y'all may have that can be done on the grill or in the SRG.  I have a couple in mind but think I would have some better things coming from y'all.

Thanks, Dee

Dee..you can make fries from about anything, sweet potatoes, zucchini, carrots, broccoli, asparaguses, cauliflower, you get the idea..I just spray with canola and season and cook on high, about 500º for about 15 - 20 minutes. Oven, SRG, g2g.  Pam .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ

Dee,
I am with Pam here. I love sweet potato fries on the grill - cut into "steak fry" wedges and grill until they have nice marks and a knife inserts easily. (I use my SRG or G2G.) My kids love zucchini and asparagus on the grill (gotta say, I like 'em too!) All the other veg work well too! In fact, almost any veg seems to work well - just oil and season - cook to your desired doneness (I like mine a bit crunchy and my kids like them softer...) Fruits work well too. I'm making some savory peaches at a friend's house tonight (probably no pics.)

I forgot to mention my absolute favorite - baby carrots! Get them small ( or pull from your garden.) I leave some stem / leaves on them for a handle and they look cool...  ;) ) A little oil (I like grape seed) and some salt - toss them on the grill and turn till they are marked all the way around. So, good, so sweet! Better than fries any day!

David is right about the carrots..you can nuke them for a few minutes then throw them on the grill. Just have fun with it.  Pam  .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ

My, my, my...
Here the Colonel has shown more intestinal fortitude than most of us can/will muster - and you guys are trying to drag him backward....shame on you! :D :D :D

Dee: - is it the carbohyrates? Or the frying that you wish to eliminate?

If it is only the frying, there are many good recipes for "un-fried french fries" on Google.

And - here is a YouTube link for low carb french fries:

I'm leaning toward nuking some potatoes in the radar box. Then seasoning them and finishing off in the SRG.  Dee

On our day of independence I think alternatives are not necessary. Cook up some nice, crispy, lard fried Freedom Fries Dee. Enjoy them without guilt because that is what this country fought for. The freedom to enjoy life!
