I am not going into the history on this, but IPv6 has been supported in Microsoft OS since at least Windows XP if not earlier. Given this, there are a few things I have noted. IPv6 has a totally different philosophy of how it addresses a network device. IPv4 has only 1 address assigned to the device where the same device can have several IPv6 addresses. As IPv4 addresses are all allocated at this point, IPv6 is increasingly becoming important. Even with network address translation available for IPv4, even in the home with all sorts of new wireless devices (internet of things, IOT), the address space is limited. IPv6 with its millions of addresses available for every man, woman, and child is going to become increasingly important.
The important thing here is that IPv6 network communications operates vastly differently due to the multiple bindings per device. As such any gateway used for security needs to support this. And as the ISP's are now beginning to switch on this on quietly, one needs to stay on top of this. The old IPv4 security just will not work for IPv6. IPv6 security relies on stateful packet inspection to accept/reject communication. IPv4 used NAT and routing rules somewhat similar but does not necessarily check each packet. Since NAT is not a part of IPv6, the older routers need updated and if no updates are available, need replaced instead. I have personally found that IPv4 routing rules enforced by a VPN software solution are blown away by IPv6 routing.
Running without security is somewhat analogous to being stripped bare and running in the cold with people with flame throwers chasing you. You will get burned. NEVER just connect a computer or other device without security to the internet. You are just begging for viruses and for other vital data about you stored on your computer to be taken and misused. I highly recommend using a router that protects both IPv4 and IPv6 communications.
IPv6 is coming, and you need to make sure you are not blindsided by this. My ISP switched this on with very little fanfare, and is still in process of setting up routing servers. Google and Facebook already use IPv6 and there are other websites that either now are IPv6 or soon will be. Please be aware that this is a now thing, and make sure you keep yourself protected out there.
