Title: Finally have the YS640 in place and covered
Post by: bbqchef on February 25, 2013, 02:59:54 PM
I finally got the 640 moved to its temporary location and got the thermal blanket installed... Now if I can just get it fired up and cooking life wil be good!

Looks nice Mike!

2 things about blankets for our pellet pits and pellet use efficiency:

*IF* you can install it once the pit is up to temp - or at least is hot - you will not be holding in the cold that the metal has stored in it.  This only makes sense if you can do so without getting burned int he process :D

*IF* you can find a way to pre-heat the air being inducted into the pit by your fan on your pit ( dryer vent extension?, vent from house oven or fireplace?) you can improve the pellet consumption rate. After all....if it is cold - an the pit is sucking in cold air...well? what do we expect? ;D :D

Does the thermal blanket adhere to the Yoder with magnets?

I figure that would make it easier and safer to cover when it is hot. I also kinda figure to cover it when it gets warm rather than when it is in full heat...probably would still work well that way??

Congrats on the YS640 bbqchef! Wife and I have the same set up including the thermo blanket, the thermo blanket well worth the investment as it will save on pellet consumption. Our is on the YS640 24/7 in the winter, we store ours and fire it up in the heated garage and roll it out to the driveway as it is warming up.

It fits in place with various hooks, snaps and belts. It's custom designed to fit around the counterweight, etc.

It appears it might be a bit dicey to try to put it on when the pit is hot. Probably better to just leave it on........

Yep, straps, clips and toggle fastners. It would be quite cumbersome to put on everytime after it is heated up.

Nope... it needs little booties <lol>.

I don't think it's a good idea to put the three-piece thermal cover on when the grill is warm. I plan on leaving it on all the time, not just in the winter.

I think that is what i would do as well...might as well save on pellets during the summer months as well.

I also have the regular cover for it but I'm thinking the thermal blanket all the time... it can't hurt.
