Title: Have you gotten rid of smokers?
Post by: cody0707 on March 07, 2016, 01:50:00 PM
Since owning the versatile PBC have you sold or got rid of your other smokers? What have you or have you not gotten rid of?

I have a MES with the mailbox mod I thought about getting rid of. If I decide to throw a butt in the smoker before leaving for work it can cook it slow enough to have it done when I walk through the door. Sadly I can't do that with the PBC unless I get a temp controller to make the PBC a low and slow cooker. I just may do that and only own my PBC.

"get rid of ". Something I don't do well....
I have a grill parts wrecking yard in my barn...  I used one of the old regulators Saturday when a brand new one failed on the Gasser.

In answer to your original question... If you use the MES and have the space for it then keep it.  There are times when that butt being ready when you arrive home is a very good thing. My son's finally died a few weeks back and he was just saying how he missed it just because he could set it out on the driveway(for fire safety) all day and have dinner ready when he got home.

Most definitely rotating cookers here! I can't force myself to get rid of any of mine. Each has it's purpose in my
arsenal.  BUT, there is always room for more!  8) ;)

Uh-oh, time for an intervention.  Cody is having thoughts about getting rid of a smoker.

Ummmmm, no. Not happening over here.  In fact one of my co-workers gave me a virtually brand new Myron Mixon pellet smoker the other day.  They bought a house and it had a uber nice outdoor kitchen with a professional grade stainless 6 burner built in so they did not need to move the pellet smoker.  So, I gave it to the daughter and her fiance, as they don't have a grill or smoker (yet). But if they don't use it soon, I'm going to rescue it from the land of neglect (Hell, I even bought them a few bags of pellets and they still have not used it).  Thought I raised her better than that, sigh......

We need some good solid data here. I hope the boys deliver. And yes, giving a smoker to a relative is a rotation.

I never get rid of grills or smokers but I do wear them out  ;D

The PBC has some great strengths, but like every other cooker it isn't perfect for everything.  I'm glad I've got room for my "arsenal".  That way I can use the PBC for what it is best at.

GASP...get rid of a grill..never..I sell and upgrade tho..Use my Lodge sportsman CI grill for the 1st time last night..so did Smokin Don, and have to trash a generic gasser or rebuild the entire insides. It's all about options. Think I wll stick with the charcoal for a while. I still have the CharBroil tabletop that I tested for them and a G2G for propane. I'm good for a while yet. I still like cooking over the open fire. .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

Yes, I have gotten rid of smokers that were on the left side of my deck by moving them to the right side and vice versa. Occasionally there may be front to back movement also.

At least swap them for different a different one. I was soooo close to selling my pellet pooper to a guy on Craigslist but I just had to back out. I hardly use it anymore but just can't quite let it go

That might be true.  I'm done rotating grills.  I'm very happy with my arsenal now.  I've known some of y'all for about ten years or so.  Some of you know me very well.  Ok, the list of grills I have gone thru that I can remember are....

One mak 2 star, three mak 1 stars, traeger Texas, traeger lil tex, Memphis pro, Daniel Boone pellet grill, hasty bake, a few 26" kettles, two 22" WSM's, two 18's, 14" WSM, pk grill, weber performer, two 22 weber kettles, one 18" kettle, two UDS's, PBC (son has my first one), kamado big Joe, kamado joe classic, Joe Jr, two large eggs.

I can't remember any more.  My boss took my Memphis advantage for the store and gave me a memphis elite for my extra work on the two shows I did last month.  Ya for me.  My true loves are charcoal and pellets.  My favorite smoker of all time is my 22 WSM.  Favorite grill is my weber performer.  Ok I'm done talking.  Giants are on now.  Gotta go.  Y'all don't laugh too hard.  We all have passions.  Mine bbqing in the backyard.

I have been through my share. I had to sell a bunch to help my parents out when they had financial probs. I am pretty set now with a Chargriller and PK for grilling. Got a pellet pooper and a electric smoker for cold weather. Got a big stack of live oak waiting for me to get a quality stick burner this spring.......then Wendy can stick a fork in me....cause I will be done  8)

Yesterday I put a butt in my MES smoker that I use an A-MAZE-N with pellets and a mailbox mod with. I let it smoke all day for about 10 hours. I let it rest and pulled it. After eating it for dinner I have decided to sell it. The flavor was non existent compared to the PBC. I told my wife the meat taste like a plain roast that I could have done in the oven. Granted that is pretty much what an electric smoker is but I had assumed the pellets did something and before owning my PBC they did. Now that I am more versed in the way a pork but should taste I no longer see a point in keeping my electric smoker.

My arsenal will soon be all charcoal to include:
Pit Barrel Cooker
Mini WSM
22.5" Webber OTG

Cody it's OK to get rid of the Masterbuilt before it dies.
Don't expect to get a lot for it however.

I don't have a smoker but I do get rid of grills when they are done. from my condo days I am giving another condo friend my electric Charbroil grill soon it has been hanging around for years I don't need it. I think six grills is enough.

I forgot that I did pass a grill to a good friend who is on a fixed income (retired & medical issues).  His no-name Walmart special was on it's poor last rusty legs.  I had just bought a nice new (new to me and in like new condition) Weber Summit S-670 uber gasser.  So I gave them my old Holland Grill which I had rebuilt at least twice.  The final rebuild was "the way it should have been" to start with.  That was 3 years ago and they are still loving the Holland Grill and use it often.

So, I guess that is another rotation (and it's a grill, not a smoker)?

I do not. I did double wall it and used it for camping. A friend borrowed it and ask how much to keep it. He uses it weekly.

I have given away an offset smoker that needed some new paint and I also gave away an LP Gas Grill, stainless steel 3 burner. To my knowledge, both are still in action! As for current grills, I may end up ditching the PBC, I'm on the fence with it right now.

I'm constantly fighting to keep my patio clear enough for me to relax with a cigar and adult beverage and still keep all my cooking gear on it. So, I have done some rotating.  :)

Before I started smoking (meat, not cigars) I had acquired an ECB (stainless) as a gift for managing not to get laid off for 10 years at work. Honestly, I completely forgot about it after a few months and only remembered after finding a bunch of you fine folks on the CB site after buying my TBE. I finally got the ECB down, unboxed it, made a few of the easy mods, but never got around to using it, as I was too busy experimenting with TBE. After buying a BEESR, I finally posted the (like new!) ECB on craigslist and sold it to someone in the next town.

Once I picked up my PBC a couple of years ago, I realized I would be doing almost all (OK, it's been 2 years, I can take out the "almost') my pork butts, ribs, wings, yard birds, brisket, etc. in the PBC. So, when the opportunity to get a co-worker interested in outdoor cooking came along, I gave him my Cajun Injector 30".

Now that I picked up a Cabela's Ultimate Cookstation, I'm trying to decide if I need to get rid of my TBE, BEESR, or fridge/grill combo. Since the TBE and BEESR can't keep my beer cold, I'm thinking one of them. Or, maybe just wait it out and see if the old lady gets used to the cluttered look.

And I rotate a lot of grills. It seems like about the time I replace most of the internals, there's either something new I want or something else goes wrong. Ohio weather doesn't help. Nor does the fact I seem to lose or quit using covers.

I did give my infrared two burner to the neighbor this weekend. That should be good enough to make room for the cookstation. Even thought it had less than half the footprint.

Hell no. I love my PBC for all kinds of stuff, but I still think my old offset smoker produces a better result for one thing - Texas whole brisket! Or maybe I just love the ritual with fiddling and babying a brisket for 14 hours. It's part of the experience for me and I think using small logs works much better for brisket. Either way, my offset smoker is also my grill. So it ain't going anywhere. PBC is only for slow cooking items. I still have to try a dessert on the PBC but have not gotten around to it even though I've had it for a while now.
