Title: New Weber
Post by: Hub on April 06, 2016, 12:57:29 PM
At first glance I thought his might have been Weber's long-awaited entry into the pellet realm.  However, upon reading it turns out to be their entry into the "flower pot"  ;) genre.  Interesting.  You pay up for quality and Weber always has it, but am I the only one that thinks this may be overpriced?

It now scares me to think if Weber does get into the pellet game......what their pricing will be  :'(

Looks nice but what a price tag :o

Agree it is a nice grill...but not $1500 to $2000 nice. I could buy 3 large WSM's and a couple smaller ones for those prices.
I will definitely be passing on this! I have been looking at the Kamado's and for my needs the Grill Dome or Chargriller Akorn is
about all I need.  But that is a long way down the road at this time.

Me to,  I figure $650 would be a fair price.  But even that would be out of my range right now :-[ :-[ :-[

I don't know about that. Seems they aren't too easy to fin. I checked to see where the closest dealer to have them is to me in the New Orleans area and closest is about 300 miles away. May be hard to find!

Forget about the price!
It really is a neat cooker!
Solves many of things about ceramic Kamodo's that bother me.
1) limited capacity, with the expander shelf & 24 in grate will smoke the same amount as a 22 WSM
2) weight & inability to move, roll around on performer cart.
3) ceramic being fragile , & prone to crack.
3) ease of use , propane lighter & ome touch ash system.
4) save money by using on sale Kingsford  ::)
5) better searing, charcoal grate adjustable for searing.

If it wasn't so damn expensive I'd order one from firecraft sight unseen

Some of your concerns can be answered by owning a Broil King Keg. Metal(unbreakable), portable(so much so that you can attach it to a trailer hitch), Easy to get heated up,Not nearly as heavy as a ceramic, Uses lump but when you're finished cooking close lid, shut vents and it shuts down and save lump for next cook.

6) where to put the bodies, I swear if one more person comes on my deck which has a Old New Braunfels smoker, a restored Weber Genesis 1000, a WSM & an Akorn & says I thought you were into outdoor cooking but "YOU DONT HAVE A BIG GREEN EGG " I'm going to kill & bury them in my backyard   >:( >:(???

Well I dropped a grand on the REC-TEC and that about killed Kimmie, but now she understands why I did it.

BUT, $1499.00 on a charcoal grill that looks like a 22.5 kettle would be hard to get past her.   Now, if she said I could buy a MAK then I could justify spending that kind of cash.

I still contend they over priced it by $800.00  ??? ??? ??? ???

Here's their warranty coverage for the new Summit.

Bowl/Lid against rust or burn through - 10 years
SS cooking grates - 5 years
One touch Cleaning System - 5 years
Plastic Components - excludes fading and discoloration - 5 years
All remaining parts - 2 years

For that cost I think it should be a better warranty.

I think I figured out what happened. Weber ain't what it used to be.  This is from a 2013 news story, but it says a lot

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Weber-Stephen has changed more in the past decade than it did in the previous half-century. It contracted to have grills built in China to go with production in Huntley and Palatine. It agreed to stop labeling products “Made in USA” to settle a class-action lawsuit that accused it of buying components from China and Taiwan suppliers. (The company denied wrongdoing.) It also introduced a line of compact grills designed for dense urban areas such as those sprouting up across Southeast Asia.

The biggest change was financial: In 2010 the Stephen family sold a majority stake to BDT Capital Partners, the Chicago merchant bank run by Byron Trott, the former Goldman Sachs executive known for his close ties to Warren Buffett. Kempster says BDT’s investment will help Weber-Stephen push overseas. The first nonfamily member to run the company, Thomas Koos, formerly of Jacuzzi Brands and Black & Decker, took over as chief executive officer in April.

The grill maker emulates General Motors’ Chevy-to-Caddy range of products, targeting consumers as they climb the income ladder. Weber-Stephen hooks college kids with the $29 Smokey Joe, a miniature kettle, then keeps them buying until they can afford a $799 Genesis gas grill or—if they need a backyard kitchen—a $5,000 Summit Grill Center, a behemoth with six gas burners, a built-in smoker, and an infrared rotisserie. There’s no fridge, just a cooler. “Consumers told us all they really needed is ice,” Kempster says.

When gas grills grew popular in the 1970s, the company offered a kettle fitted with a propane tank. “The shape was so associated with charcoal grilling, it just never caught on,” Kempster says. In 1985, Weber-Stephen introduced the rectangular Genesis gas line with triangular “Flavorizer” cooking bars designed to minimize flare-ups while mimicking the mouthwatering effect of meat and fish juices sizzling on hot coals. Today, four of Consumer Reports’ top seven midsize grills for 2013 are Webers, and the company’s new cookbook is an Amazon.com bestseller. Its U.S. call centers handle 500,000 questions a year, from how long to cook a pork tenderloin to the best way to grill a squirrel.

The new Weber-Stephen CEO has asked Kempster, 66, to stay for at least two more years. Kempster has nine Weber grills and smokers in his backyard, including a pair of 36-inch kettles he uses to cook for crowds. His go-to dishes are beef tenderloin and Alaskan king crab legs. He suggests snipping off the thicker ends of the crab legs and cooking them for 10 to 12 minutes before putting the thin ends on the grill.
