Like many of you I use a charcoal chimney to light charcoal.
Over the years Ive used a lot of things as the fuel source.
Wadded paper, cheap always around , usually works, the ash is a mess & sometimes gets on your food.
Oiled paper towels, less mess, cheap, somewhat messy to make.
Weber lighter cubes , no mess , very easy, pricy , but locally about $0.26 / cube in season. I've gotten lazy , so I've been buying the W cubes & stocking up. My Garage ate my stock of 4 boxes :'(
Got online & the weber cubes are ridiculous with shipping :'(
Instead bought a box of RUTLAND FIRESTARTER SQUARES, box of 144 cost $10.20 & shipping $5.80.
Cost is $0.11 / cube , they work great with a charcoal chimney, no mess , 1 cube does the trick!
Very happy!

Great tip LA!

Thanks LA!! When I run out of Weber cubes I will get some of those Rutland cubes.

LA, I use a burner on my CampChef gas stove on the back porch, but I am sorta lazy. If you have a gas grill with a side burner that works too.

I use a gas burner as well. I don't know how the price compares to cubes, but if you're in a rush you can leave it on and get the chimney completely lit pretty fast.

I don't use it very often any more but when I do I really appreciate the built-in propane lighter on my Weber Performer. It's fast, easy, no muss/no fuss.

Hey twopockets..is your campchef gas stove one of them with the portable oven? If it is..how well do they bake? I have seen them online but haven't talked to anyone that has used one. I know you know all about that kind of stuff. Thanks Pam ★*˚°。°

Pam this is the stove I have, I picked up at Costco several years ago for $149. It came with a heavy cast iron griddle that covers 2 of the burners. It sits on my back deck full time and in good weather it gets used several times a week. We don't fry anything in the house any more and it is great for shrimp/crab boils, blackening fish, fajitas and about anything you would use a stove or a flat top for. I have 2 of the 14" Academy cast iron grddles I use on it mostly along with all our cast iron skillets.

You may be thinking of this stove/oven combo. We sold them at Academy but it wasn't a big seller so we put them on clearance. I have heard mixed reviews, but for camping it should be a good fit.

Thanks Ken..that last one is what I was looking for, but the price was only $149.00. There were no reviews but I am looking for an oven for the campground. Got any on sale at your place? Pam ★*˚°。°

They were around $200+ something at Academy and I think they got down to around $129 on clearance. I don't know if we have any left and I can't find them on our online store. I will check when I go back to work Monday.
Here it is at Amazon Pam and there several reviews, most really good. I think this would be a very good fit for camping. We had our motorhome for over 6 years and used the stove inside only twice and never used the oven. We did all our cooking outside. I used the oven as a storage cabinet.

Ken..I had a freind almost burn up in a camper..and I don't trust the propane in it..so I look for portable because I have a convection microwave oven but it does not bake right. I love to bake..a lot. I will keep checking..
Thanks for checking for me. Pam ★*˚°。°

Pam,
I've seen those oven/stove combos at Costco and Sam's Club for about 150 bucks. But they seem to only carry them in the summertime. I always wanna get one but then realize I have other cookers that will basically do all the same things. You can get camp stoves on craigslist for between 10 and 20 bucks and with a little effort you can bake on most barbecues. Still, it seems like a cool item.
