Title: Got to meet some of the guys and a nice lady.
Post by: veryolddog on July 25, 2013, 04:52:28 PM
I just got back from Lockhart, Texas, the BBQ capital of the world. This little but very nice community has four major BBQ joints and more so around it.

Got to me Mr. Teesquare and the very lovely, Mrs. Teesquare, Captain Jack, and IR2Dum. We all had a taste of BBQ at Smitty's market. I ordered a pound of brisket and the others sample a little of everything. We all took pictures and will be probably showing them shortly. However, I have to wait until my phone recharges so that it can upload my pictures from Dropbox to Photobucket.

Jaxon called us on the phone so we had an opportunity to visit with him as well.

As I left, I think that they were going visit and sample the other BBQ places. That's a lot of food.

We will update you guys when the pictures are ready.

Ed

Ok...the phone uploaded the photos from dropbox to photobucket so I start showing some pictures. The other guys took a lot of pictures as well and they will be posting soon, I am sure. So, I just finished folding laundry, fed the Golden, (Dixie), fed the cat, (Fluffy), grabbed a Shiner Bock Black Bohemium beer from the ice box and just sat in the chair.

Lockhart is a beautiful little Western town and all it has is BBQ for which it is very famous. Here is a picture of the BBQ joint called Smitty's Market.

That is Captain Jack taking a picture outside as well.

Here is a picture of one of the many pits that they have going all of the time.

Very simple eating.

Here's Don aka Ir2dum

Here's another fire pit. Notice that they use these whole logs about 3 feet long and about 10 inches thick.

Here's the menu. You order brisket by the pound which I actually did. You can order a ring of sausage, ribs, etc.

Here's the wood waiting to go into the pits.

Here's Mr. Teesquare, Mrs. Teesquare, and Captain Jack.

I thought that I had more but the camera ran out of battery.

I found a couple more pictures.

Here is Mr. and Mrs. Teesquare. You can easily tell that Mrs. Teesquare is the better half. And, she is definitely more pleasing to look at.

(http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l494/edsigman/2013-07-25132709.jpg) (http://s1120.photobucket.com/user/edsigman/media/2013-07-25132709.jpg.html)

Here is the illustrious Captain Jack. His family, by the way goes back to 1831 settling in Texas from Tennessee which means they got to Texas before Davy Crockett. His ancestors fought at the battle of San Jacinto. He is also a combat veteran of the US Army Viet Nam and many thanks for his service to his country.

(http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l494/edsigman/2013-07-25124523.jpg) (http://s1120.photobucket.com/user/edsigman/media/2013-07-25124523.jpg.html)

This is where you order your grub. They wrap all of the food in butcher paper, provide bread, crackers, a plastic knife and you go back to your table to eat. Side dishes can be obtained along with drinks at the counter inside the A/C eating area. The area near the pits must be 100 degrees or more. With all of the BBQ pits in Texas going at the same time, no wonder it is 98 degrees in the summer.

(http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l494/edsigman/2013-07-25123009.jpg) (http://s1120.photobucket.com/user/edsigman/media/2013-07-25123009.jpg.html)

I think that is it for now. I am sure the other folks will be posting there pictures soon.

Ed

I had the best time meeting up with these guys. My pictures are exactly the same as the ones all ready posted so I will spare ya'll the redundancy. I will just say how much fun it is talking bbq and getting to know these great guys. This is the first time I met Ed (veryolddog) and I must say that he fits in perfectly with all of us. He is so nice and had some great stories.  I have met Tim before a couple of times, but I didn't realize that he was married to such a beautiful lady that keeps him grounded. When ya'll say he married up, you really don't know how right that statement is. If it wasn't for Kay, Tim would be way out of control. And what can I say about Cuz Jack? Well, he is just a great guy. Now I'm not saying that because we call each other "cuz". We really are related and wouldn't have known that if it wasn't for another bbq forum (CharBroil's).  Because we live in the same town surrounded by about 4 million of our closest friends, we decided to meet over a plate of bbq about 3 years ago. During that first lunch, we discovered that we really are closely related to each other. So close, in fact, that I have now attended his wife's family reunion.  Two hours after we met for the first time, Jack emailed me his geneology charts showing how the family on my dad's side met up with the family on his wife's side. I was astounded at the odds of us ever getting to know each other. Well, to make my point about this....if you ever get a chance to meet up with any of your fellow bbq forum members, be sure to take it. I have found that everyone I have met on this forum or other bbq forums is a top notch guy and gal that you would love to spend time with and exchange stories and ideas. I have now met about 14 or 15 of you guys and gals mostly because of the Gathering (which is in two months in Augusta in case you haven't heard). Someone said that the Gathering was like a family reunion with out the family bickering. The people that I have met are now life long friends and it's all because of this forum and our love for bbq and outdoor cooking.

I got a call from IR2dum earlier saying he was gonna call in 10 minutes so I could talk to the guys. Guess they got wrapped up in their bbq cause I didn't hear back from them..Hope they had fun.  Pam .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥

Sorry, Pammie. I thought I texted you to call me in 10 minutes. I just thought you were busy. Would have loved to let you talk to everybody. I couldn't get hold of Dee, either. Not to worry. We will see you in a couple of months.

LUCKY ME!

Don called me while they were at the table. What a thrill it was for me to get to talk to the guys as they passed the phone around. I was on cloud 9 the rest of the day. Now I know I will be making plans to take Don up on his gracious invitation to visit with him and Barbara after I retire later this year.
He is going to take us to Lockhart to start our tour of great Texas bbq joints. I am looking forward to meeting Ed & Jack when we come out there.

What great pictures guys!

Special thanks for taking the time to share with me on the phone.

Thank y'all so much for the pictures.  IR2Dum says that Capt Jack is leaning toward coming to the Gathering.  I sure hope so because I have wanted to meet him for so long and listen to his stories about Texas history.  Wow.  With learning about David Holly's trips, Capt Jack's TX history, Art's sausage making and knife sharpening and the other things I feel like I'm going to a graduate school of life in September. "Tim looks pretty good in his 10 gallon hat"  :) :)

you have never seen a Texan SOooooo GLAD to be home in the Mother Land (http://i50.tinypic.com/20ztyfl.gif)

You have no idea... ;) ;D It was a trip that gave me back a sense of "self"...hard to explain I suppose. But, the shocker of the trip was my wife's reaction to the Hill Country and Fredricksburg in particular.
She proclaimed that we will be buying a ranch in the next few years in or very near Fredricksburg. To put that in perspective: The last time she said something like that was in reference to our move to the mountains of Western NC. I was working out of the country, and had given here a power of attorney for real estate dealings.
I came home to a new address..... :D :D :D

So - perhaps the prodigal son will return after all ;)....

Tee we are looking at possible retirement moves and Western NC is in the mix along with NW GA and also the TX hill country. We have visited  NC and GA locations and as soon as Lana is up for some traveling we are going to hit TX.

Ken, I've had the good fortune of spending significant time in all three states.  Areas like Boone, NC are gorgeous and has good pork BBQ but no one wants to deal with snow and you can't find good Mexican food in the Carolinas (they seem to make their salsa with ketchup).  Georgia is beautiful and Atlanta is one of the most liveable big cities around but you've got state income tax, kudzu, and no consistent BBQ identity.

But the Hill Country of Texas ... you have beautiful sunsets, temperate weather, a thriving economy, KILLER Mexican food, and some of the finest brisket and sausage under the sun, moon and stars.

I think your decision is made clear.   ;)

One of the things  I really like about the Texans is their attitude.  They seem to have this attitude that they know what heaven is like because they are living in it.   Dee

I can neither confirm nor deny the veracity of your statement, Dee.  However, everything is bigger in Texas ... including our egos.   ;D
