Title: Rust Never Sleeps
Post by: smokeasaurus on August 25, 2013, 12:29:21 PM
This is a video by Ritch the owner of Gator Pits of Texas. Now I have dealt with Ritch in the past and he is a straight shooter and makes some of the best pits around. This video shows a smoker that was brought to Gator to rejuvenate. Now this pit had a little more neglect than most pits get but it is a great 20 minutes showing what can happen to the best of pits after decades of neglect. Now most folk has charcoal grills that wouldn't last -2- years any with neglect but I bet watching this video will make you think twice when you are felling lazy and putting off cleaning your grill!! I have had nightmares from watching this video.....

He tried to hide it earlier in the video and then forgot about it. Ritch believes in protecting his shop  ;)

Not a thing wrong with that!

No reason to hide that. I have a feeling a majority of his customers would not be offended ;)

I feel bad for that grill.  It deserves better.

Great video, when I was selling grills and smokers at Academy I would tell everybody who bought a charcoal or wood cooker to keep the ash cleaned out whether it was a $50 grill or a $700 smoker. Leaving ash in is the number one cause of failure for a grill. I would also tell them to get some high heat paint to keep rust touched up. When I would sell those Old Country pits like Jaxon bought I always told them if they kept it up they would be passing it down to their grandkids.

I noticed the handgun, I figured at the end of the video he was going to use it to put that smoker out of it's misery.

Scary looking nasty in the bottom of each of those chambers.  Although I'm somewhat guilty of neglect at times, I'll try to at least prep for winter, and clean out my units of all visible gunk.

These days I purchase spare parts well in advance of the manufacturer's planned obsolescence of their unit so I can fix my grill rather than having to throw it away.  One of the parts that I find degrades the easiest is the diffuser plate above the gas burner, and the gas burner itself.  I currently have this Charmglow:
... and just yesterday my wife and I gave it a through cleaning and parts replacement (only need a diffuser this time).  It might not be perfectly pretty, but it sure did work well with the pizzas we did last night.

We live in a rather rural/mountainous environment, and I almost am never without my weapon.  I even walk down to the mailbox, and do all of my back deck socializing with it within arms reach.

I smoked those beef ribs and spare ribs on Friday.  Before I smoked the butt on Saturday, I cleaned all the ash out of the firebox.  I keep a whisk broom out there for that purpose.  I get ALL the ash out.
I line the bottom of the cooking chamber with heavy duty foil to make it easier to remove the grease, leaves, and sea shells.  :D
A triangle wire brush from Academic Sports help to keep the grates clean - not spotless - but clean.  A little cooking oil helps keep them seasoned.

There is no reason for me to carry my Glock in the backyard while I'm smokin'...maybe later, if the neighbors start fighting over my 'Q.

You don't care for your pit if you have a restless nights sleep after watching this video.........

I always take care of my smokers.

THE MARINE CORPS TRAINED ME AND TAUGHT ME HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PIT. OOOORAH!

In so far as the gun is concerned, it is obvious that he is not going to be a willing victim. And, frankly, I can't blame him.

I know approximately where his shop is ... it's definitely not a bad idea to have your EDC on you inside the loop in Houston.  Knowing the Texas BBQ community, his customers will see that as a selling point ...  :)

Just to clarify something he says, Ash is NOT "acidic".

It is an alkaline, the opposite of acidic.

Still Corrosive, which is probably the word he should have used.

"Damnit Jim, I'm a pit builder not a chemist!" :)

The main reason I bought a primo ceramic grill was because my jenn-airs bottom fell out due to neglect. I swore I would never have another metal grill again but I sure do want a pellet pooper bad :) Fun Video Smoke!!

No rust worries on my Memphis. About the only thing not stainless is the wheels and the electronics ;)
