Title: smelt
Post by: fishingbouchman on March 01, 2014, 03:17:13 PM
Now if I only like to eat them I would be in the money. But the best sturgeon bate around. Been closed for the last few years and they let us dip today.  There are a ton of these things.  I will try and get a video later once the river clears up a bit.  Took us maybe 1/2 an hour to get 4 limits.

A coworker who has never dipped before.
Dip net in. And drag down river

A couple of our Legions here in NE Iowa have a Smelt fry every April.  One of my fondest childhood memories was working at the smelt fry and getting to eat all I wanted for free.

I haven't had fried smelt in years.  That last time I remember having them I was given a plate that was piled high.  Couldn't finish them all.

The pictures bring back memories from my childhood in Michigan.  We used to go out a night on the small rivers with lanterns and use dip nets.  When they were running, it only took a short time to get a wash tub full.  In the Winter, my father and his buddies had a fish shanty on Crystal lake.  They had homemade reels on the ceiling and used multiple hooks with small live minnows for bait.  They tied a rubber band in line, and watched for the band stretching when they got a bite.  I remember these Winter smelt being much larger.  Also, my Grandmother fried them in flour after cutting off the heads and gutting with a pair of scissors.  They looked just like the pictures in this post.  As a kid, I could not believe that my Grandfather ate them whole, bones and all.  He also liked the crispy tails.  Fond memories.

When I lived in Minnesota it was common to don breast waders and team up with several guys to get into the ice water and drag minnow nets along the Great Lakes' shorelines.  The nets would sometimes get so heavy that that we struggled to get them in.  We'd dump the smelt into garbage cans, haul them home and distribute them.

Pappymn, are guys still doing that?

Marcia's parents were Norwegian immigrants.  FIL could clean them with scissors in less time than it takes to tell about it.  I think that MIL sometimes used a safety pin or maybe it was a bobby pin.  I don't quite remember, I was usually testing the beer.

We supplied many American Legion and Elks Club smelt fries.

The smelt seem to be returning to some of the North Shore Streams.  Pretty scarce up here for many years. South shore still good.  Local fish market gets them and has them on the menu. Good stuff
