Flies
« Reply #-1 on: August 10, 2014, 11:32:29 AM »
What do you guys and gals do about flies when smoking? It seems that they are all over the place and trying to keep them out of the house while going in and out is almost next to imposable. Right now I have a fan blowing that helps some but do you have a secret method that you use?

The traditional method seems to work in my neighborhood...

Everyone is entitled to my opinion

When going outside I open the sliding door slightly and wave a fly swatter around for a few seconds before quickly going out ... before coming back in I again wave the fly swatter around before entering.  Doesn't always keep them all out but it seems to help for me.

I don't know RAD, they are driving us crazy at home right now. They hang out by my back door and every time I open it to tend to a grill they get in the house. I put up 3 of those sticky fly strips and not one fly has got on them. I keep a fly swatter next to me at all times and have killed dozens but they keep coming. I hate dadgum flies.

They seem to be getting worse every year. The fan helps but I don't want to keep moving it and running it.

KH, great advice as always  ;D

Just try to get them away from the door before I open it.  Not much else you can do.  I have put up fly strips.  It catches some, but there are more right behind them.

an old trick that some swear by and some debunk-  hang some bags of water. See the links
http://animals.howstuffworks.com/insects/water-bags-repel-flies1.htm
http://www.snopes.com/critters/wild/flies.asp

I have seen it with small baggies filled with water and taped to the glass doors of a patio.

Again take it with a grain of salt.

I don't think much helps but wave your hands or fly swatter like some when going in and out. I keep a fly swatter where I bbq and keep them down. My wife seen where you put a dish of apple cider vinegar w/a few drops of dish soap and it will attract and kill them. After two week there were about a dozen little gnats and two fly in it!

I have tried the water bags and doesn't work for me. I think the best method is like a friend at his retirement party, he had some great BBQ chicken. We were all eating outdoors and the flies were terrible. One of his granddaughters said I can't keep the flies off my chicken leg. He said here, taking the leg, he said hold it in one hand and use the other to keep the flies off and take a bite in between!  ;) Works! Smokin Don

My second house I bought had bats that lived behind the shutters (that was news to me) ???

Every night they would take off, and every morning they would return. You got used to the ruckus in the early morning hour.

Anyway, my yard had SIGNIFICANTLY fewer flies then anywhere I have lived.

Put up a couple of bat houses

If you use the bags with water, put in a couple of pennies.  Dee

It's said if you pour a beer into a bowl about two hours before a party lay it down twenty feet or so from the table you will not have any flies at your table they will be at the beer.

I would test this but Kimmie won't let me have a beer to try it out  ;) ;)
