Using decking for planking fish
« Reply #-1 on: August 23, 2014, 11:06:11 PM »
Has anyone here used cedar decking, like from Lowes, for planking salmon? I bought a section with this intention, but I cannot find online if it's chemically treated. It's called Top Choice decking. Anyone have experience with this?

Have not tried it...but I would *NOT recommend it unless you can find conclusive proof that it is NOT treated wood. No sense waking up dead! ;) ;D

****Thanks Mike...I just saw my omission of the word NOT..... ??? ??? ??? and fixed it***

I would not use any wood that you are not 100% positive it is not treated. Especially when you food will be making direct contact with that wood.

I don't think it would kill you but do you want to expose yourself to chemicals?

X2! It is easy enough to find food grade cedar, alder and other planks - no need to take a chance.

I know, I know guys. But I'm also a forum member at slickdeals.net, so I'm clearly  a frugal guy. The price of food grade planks is ridiculous. I just like to show up the bit business. However, I sure as hell won't sacrifice my health to do it. I'm cooking the salmon tomorrow, so we'll see what I I can learn until then. Thanks so far.

Just go to Lowes and get their plain cedar boards. Cedar has its own built in decay and insect prevention so it isn't pressure treated. The brand name you said, seems to be pressure treated cedar color board.
