Sticker shock

I was in the grocery store today and got quite a shock.  I'm sure we all know that beef prices are going thru the roof at a rapid rate.  I saw a very small package of beef short ribs (1.39 lbs., most of which was bone).  The package was marked $9.71, which was $6.99/lb.  If it was all meat, that might not be so bad, but don't think I'll be paying that for some bones with a small amount of meat attached.

I usually only buy short ribs when on sale. They normally run around that price per pound here. When cooked right they are so good!

You can go as often as you want.  Just get a new day pass each visit.

Wegman's has butts for 1.49/lb all day everyday.  Sometimes get lucky and find 1.29/lb at other stores on sale

Regular Beef Back Ribs have been  like that for a couple of years now (high priced and trimmed to the point of being disappointing when you look at them), which is why I rarely buy them anymore.

We do one of two things:

• Beef short ribs are a much better value and our butcher almost always has them, so it makes more sense to buy them when I have a hankering for beef ribs.
• When we buy a standing rib roast, our butcher already knows to I want the chine bone trimmed off (which I save for making stock), then I can trim the ribs off myself (actually leaving a little meat) and stick them in the freezer for when I want some beef ribs.

We usually buy beef ribs at Food 4 Less for 1.99 to 2.99 a lb. I know we are paying for more bone than meat...but when done right, that little bit of meat is so darn tasty.......

Our Kroger had pork butts for $1.49 a pound today, so I picked one up for sausage.  It was $3.99 a pound back over the Christmas holiday.  This is the first time I've seen it back under $1.98 a pound since then.  We used to see $0.99 a pound fairly regularly, but I think those days are gone.
