10 minute cold brewed coffee
« Reply #-1 on: August 23, 2016, 03:20:31 PM »
There is a new product being funded on Indiegogo that is supposed to cold brew coffee in 10 minutes. It uses vacuum to draw the water through the grounds to speed up the process. Here is the link... https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/prisma-cold-brew-coffee-technology#/

So I decided to test this process using my vacuum tumbler. I loaded it with the exact amount of water and coffee grounds that I use in my OXO for comparison. This way I am familiar with a 24 hour cold brewing cycle comes out in strength and flavor compared to this.

Loaded up the chamber and left in the tumbling insert...

Set timer for 10 minutes. This batch got a tumble and vacuum for 10 minutes...

Now I am not aware of how much vacuum my tumbler had using a hand pump and how much the Prima does so this is not a fair comparison obviously. I am just trying to determine how well this process works.

After the tumble was over I dumped the brew into my OXO to drain and test.

The results were not bad for 10 minutes honestly. It was not as strong as a 24 hour brew and the flavor was more mellow but I was able to make a decent cup of coffee with it. Next time I might try 60 minutes and see if that yields better result.

My take is that there is something to this method and maybe under much higher vacuum there could be better results. This would be great in a pinch if you were suddenly out of cold brew :P

Brew 10/40 on a 24 hour cycle on my oxo.  Love it a lot.  The vacuum thing is cool.

Looks like the same one Pam. I bought one when they were on close out sale.  It's the AGS  Countertop Tumbler. In fact right now the canister only is $8.99 at Amazen products.

I don't think I have ever had cold brewed coffee and I am sure I am missing out on something good. I guess I am just an old phart but I enjoy getting my coffee maker ready, putting in some fine coffee and smelling it as it brews then pouring the perfect cup and waiting just long enough till it is is just barely cool enough to drink and then savoring every sip. Black, no sugar, no ice to cool it down.

"cold brew"...in the context we are talking about is really room temp. I preheat my cup with hot water - pour it out, put int he 3-1/2 oz. of cold brew concentrate - and top off the cup. It goes in the microwave for 30 seconds. Comes out piping hot. And - seriously Ken....it is the best cup of coffee you will ever have. The chemistry of this room temp steeping that we call cold brewing is able to get the good stuff out of the coffee grounds - without bringing the acidity, bitterness or oils. It also is higher in caffeine ;)...SO - give it a try sometime.  It may change your life...or giv you a sense of rhythm and the urge to dance with the Mrs. ;D

Although I make cold brew for my wife (I take some during the week not to wake her up 1 am when I get ready for work), I am with you and prefer traditional hot brew.  The smells alone are great.  I am an "old school" kind of disenfranchised (gulp) millennial.  I get the Sunday paper delivered, pot of coffee, with soccer or Sunday News shows on in the background.
