Cold Weather Propane Grill Safety Tips
« Reply #-1 on: December 13, 2016, 08:16:10 PM »
Ok, I'm sure most of you are aware of Cold Weather Propane Grill Safety Tips but let's just review.

Can there be moisture (water) in a propane tank? Answer is generally no although it does happen and it happens more than you think especially with tanks we pick up from the gas station or anywhere else. What happens is that it ( the moisture) freezes in the regulator or in the control valve and doesn't allow gas flow. The best whay to handle this is to bring it inside to above freezing temps. Thaw it out and return it outside.  Do not use a torch of any type this could start a fire or an explosion. Take the tank back and ask for a replacement the newer the tank the better.  If you own the tank ask for it to be purged this will remove any moisture from the system.

Remember to be careful and do the right thing, please add your own advice it will be appreciated by all  :) :)

I'm following closely because I've never heard of this issue.

Is this just a problem in the cold north country?

But why not the fire.......explosion are fun!....

Enough kidding aside, it is never a good idea to put direct heat on a device that has rubber parts to control gas pressure.  This is a recipe for disaster.

Yes it is.. I store all the grills in the garage where for the most part it stays above freezing except when it gets really cold my SRG is out on the deck and Ive had issues with the gas control on the SRG being froze and the regulator coming off the tanks being froze. Usually if I bring them inside for 30 minutes the problem goes away or it melts away. I called customer service and was told that its moisture whithin the propane thats causing the issue.

How cold does it have to get for the regulator to freeze up?

I had it happen in the heat of summer.

One of my tanks was a little over filled (I no longer have that tank as the safety float was obviously not working).  This allowed liquid propane to enter the regulator body.  As the liquid flashed to a vapor inside the regulator housing, the cold reaction caused the moisture in the humid Jaw-Jaa (Georgia for those above the Mason Dixie line), air of summer froze the body of the regulator up.

I took a hair dryer and defrosted it.  Just kept it warm with the dryer and the grill burners on high until I burned off the overfill to a normal level.  So it can happen even in 90* weather.

Sparky when I was doing my article on grill safety  I  came across a true story.........This is hard to believe but I must guess there was lots of adult drinks involved.

Two guts were ready to go into a game so they put their charcoal grill into the trunk of their car.

Still lit! ??? ??? ??? ???

I guess they thought the air would run out or they were not thinking at this point.......they took a few cars with them on that move.

What I would do even as a young fan that had a few drinks was

1) line my grill with two layers of foil,

2) when done I had brought water I would put out the fire with water.

3) Take the foil out & toss it

4) water down the grill a second time

5) wait until it was cold.

6) inspect it

7) Keep it under the car for the game or as the grills got more expensive in the trunk.

8) when ready to leave put it in the trunk if it was not already.

there was not a piece of ash on that grill when it went inside the car
