Today is Test Day for a Rub, Pellets and Temp Monitor
« Reply #-1 on: January 11, 2017, 08:24:30 PM »
Now that Savannah temperatures are back to their normal warm I decided to test some products.

A new rub for me, Oak Ridge Dominator Sweet Rib Rub, on Loin Back Ribs.

Also Louisiana Grills Wisconsin Hickory Pellets because of a sale at Walmart. $10.99 per 40 lbs.
Plus monitoring temperatures using Thermoworks Smoke.

Smoke produced was almost as good my normal Cooking Pellets Competition Blend.

Must less smoke ring than produced by Cooking Pellets Competition Blend.

For comparison below is the smoke ring produced with Cooking Pellets Competition Blend.

Bottom line:
Ribs were tasty with a good chew so I will say I do like the Oak Ridge Dominator Sweet Rib Rub and will use it again.  One thing to remember the rub is very sweet for those who like a sweet rib like my family.

The ribs had less smoke flavor along with less smoke ring from the Louisiana Grills Wisconsin Hickory.

The Thermoworks Smoke work as advertised and I am please that I purchased it for when I do not need my Rock's Stoker.

Great looking ribs Art! Thanks for the mini review on those pellets, saves me from trying them. I like the competition blend and also like my Lumberjack pellets.

Lumberjack is based in Wisconsin. I wonder if they made the pellets you tried?

Art you done good! As usual! Your ribs look el perfecto!
I might add tho about the pellets. Do not necessarily discount that brand because of that particular wood. I have noticed a difference in pellets/hour burned, and amount of smoke within brands. I primarily burn Lumberjack pellets but have noticed that when I burn 100% Maple, it burns a bit faster and with less smoke than at same temp with say Hickory/Oak /Cherry.

I am more concerned with smoke quality and quantity then temperature difference and the smoke produce was small and with little smoke flavor in the ribs compared to Cooking Pellets, Lumberjack or BBQ'ers Delight.

But thanks for the info. :)

I will be looking forward to your opinion of BBQers Delight Peach which are, I am thinking, a very mild pellet.

Let me give you something to think about....My favorite combo for flavor and aroma has always been 100% cherry and 100% pecan pellets - blended 50/50.

But - I think that most of the stone fruit pellets with pecan are all top notch. If you have some - try it. I think you will be pleasantly surprised if you have not combined these two.

The pecan is a rich, but not too strong flavor and the cherry brought the sweetness and an incredible smoke ring.
BBQ is neither verb or noun. It is an experience.

Continuing testing of Louisiana Grills Pellet on sale from Walmart   Smoke roasted chicken thighs using  Louisiana Grills Competition Blend Pellets at a cost of $7.85 per 20# bag.

Set the Savannah Stoker Cook Mode  to smoke at 170 pit temp for 2.5 hours and then 300 pit temp for 1 hour which gave an chicken temp of 170 degrees and than into hold mode of 160.

Five chicken things were eaten for dinner and the rest bagged for my diet food.

Bottom line on the pellets:
Sweetie said "the chicken had the nicest smoke flavor of any pellet I have smoke roasted chicken with.
Next sale I will buy more but I need to smoke a butt or some ribs and see how they do.
