BBQ Pitmasters on TV
« Reply #-1 on: January 20, 2013, 11:41:18 AM »
I may really be stepping in it, but that rarely stops me.

I try to watch this show and it is almost unwatchable to me. The food always seems to be very average at best. And I guess I am not a fan of the judges.

The concept of the show is decent, but the execution is blah.

Is it just me? Be gentle ;)

I thoroughly enjoyed the first season. I liked following then on the circuit and seeing some of the challenges they went through. After that, the series has gone downhill!!

I think they ought to follow teams throughout the tour for a season and then the next season follow another group of teams at different events...just my

I think you are right on Pappy! I find it a humorous and overall entertaining show.

One of our own members here was recently on it as a team member (BMerrill). Might be interesting to get his insight on the behind the scenes....

BBQ Pitmasters is a game show. The cooks are contestants. Nothing more.
Being a competition BBQ team is not a requirement to be a contestant.

Season one was a reality TV show following several KCBS BBQ teams.

I think more of a documentary style show would be great. A real deep dive, not something that has to be wrapped up in 30 minutes. Show some butchering, prep work, equipment.....I would watch that.

But if it has to be a game show, can they bring out the Demo Dollies ;)

Season 1:
I know a lot of folks preferred Season 1.  I liked Season 1 in that you got a good feel for what the BBQ circuit is like.

But to be honest after the first few episodes, you got it, and they started to get a bit repetitive with only slight twists. A second or third season like Season 1 would've been boring to me.

Season 2:
I enjoyed the format of season 2. I especially liked the surprise challenges. It tested their pitmaster skills & creativity with things other than typical competition BBQ.

But the judging... well let's just say it was a little too "American Idol" for my taste (if that makes sense).

Seasons 3 & 4:
I have not seen these seasons yet, so I really can't say.  I heard they changed the format slightly and it's not been received well. Some folks don't expect another season after this. I'll reserve judgement for when I get to see for myself.

They need new judges and a better format... but it's TV not reality!

Mike you have it correct. It is entertainment.
If you are a competive BBQ cook, you may see some of your competition on the show.
But I think this show has done a lot to expand the world of professional BBQ.
Before I saw the show I had little interest in cooking BBQ professionally.
After seeing several episodes, cooking once with a team went on the bucket list.
In June 2012 I got that chance. 6 contest later, I'm cooking at the Jack.
Yep, been on BBQ Pitmaster too. I was the assistant to Samuel Jones Skylight Inn Jan 13 episode.
Had a great time.  Love to do it again.

This is not directed at Pitmasters as I've see it only a few times. The comment about an instruction show is interesting. I used to never miss the Food Network when Emeril and some of the other cooking shows were on because they taught you something as well as entertained.  Now, except for a few saturday morning shows, it is all reality TV and I no longer watch it.  They do alot of surveys I guess before they put any programs on and I guess the reality shows are what are preferred.  It's become the same with the Weather Channel since NBC took it over.  I may be the only one with these opinions...which won't be the first time ;)  Dee

I enjoy watching at times. If Myron could ever get over that rectal craineal inversion it would be better. Nobody thinks as much of Myron as Myron.

Yup! But he is not a judge anymore. I think he got the gig cause he likes BBQ.
